A guard that fits well is one a child will actually wear.

Hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, martial arts and even casual backyard games can lead to knocks to the mouth. A mouthguard helps cushion impact and may reduce the risk of chipped, broken or knocked-out teeth and cuts to the lips and cheeks. Its value depends heavily on fit, comfort and whether the child keeps it in.

For Hillcrest families, our Port Dover office can assess your child’s teeth and discuss a custom mouthguard. The dentist will consider growing teeth, braces and the sport involved so the guard suits your child’s current stage. You will also learn how to check the fit as the season goes on and when a replacement may be needed.

Why it matters

Growing teeth benefit from thoughtful protection.

Common sports injuries

Front teeth are particularly vulnerable during falls, collisions and contact with sticks, balls or elbows. Injuries range from small chips to teeth that are pushed out of position or knocked out entirely. Adult front teeth that are damaged early in life may need care for many years, which is one reason parents often ask about protection.

Why fit affects protection

A guard that is too bulky or loose can be uncomfortable, make speaking and breathing difficult and end up in a pocket rather than the mouth. A properly fitted guard stays in place, allows easier breathing and is more likely to be worn consistently. The best guard is one that protects without becoming a reason to take it out.

Choosing a guard

Different guards offer different levels of fit.

Stock and boil-and-bite options

Ready-made guards are inexpensive and widely available, but they often fit loosely. Boil-and-bite guards can be moulded at home for a closer fit, though results vary. These may be reasonable for some children, especially when teeth are changing quickly. Ask the dentist what to look for if you choose one of these options for your child.

Custom-made guards

A custom guard is made from an impression or scan of your child’s teeth. It is shaped for their mouth and can be designed with the sport in mind. The dentist will discuss whether a custom guard suits a child who is still losing baby teeth, since growth may mean it needs replacing sooner than expected.

Fitting appointment

The process is usually quick and straightforward.

  1. Taking impressions

At the first visit, the dentist checks your child’s teeth and takes impressions or a digital scan. If your child has braces, mention this, because the guard design may need to allow for brackets and ongoing tooth movement. The team can explain each step in simple terms so your child knows what to expect at each stage.

  2. Checking comfort and fit

When the guard is ready, the dentist checks that it seats properly, does not press on the gums and allows your child to close comfortably. Encourage your child to say whether anything feels tight or rubs. Small adjustments are often possible. Practise wearing it around the house before a game to get used to the feel.

Care and replacement

Good habits help the guard last the season.

  • Daily cleaning and storage

Rinse the guard after each use, clean it gently with a soft brush and store it in a ventilated case. Keep it away from hot cars and direct sunshine, which can warp the material. Discourage chewing on the guard. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can see whether it still fits and look for damage.

  • When a new guard is needed

Growing children may outgrow a guard as new teeth arrive or the jaw develops. Replace it if it becomes loose, cracked, worn or uncomfortable. If your child suffers a dental injury despite wearing a guard, call the office promptly. A guard reduces risk, but it cannot prevent every possible injury, so prompt assessment still matters.

Planning your appointment

Ahead of the season in Hillcrest.

Call our Port Dover office before sports season begins to book an assessment and impressions. Mention the sport, whether your child wears braces and when the guard is needed so the team can plan.

Bring any current guard to the appointment so the dentist can compare fit and discuss what your child likes or dislikes about it.

Mouthguard questions from parents

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

At what age should my child wear a mouthguard?

Any child playing a sport with a risk of falls or contact may benefit. The dentist can advise on suitable options for your child’s age and stage of tooth development, including whether a custom guard is practical yet.

Can my child wear a guard with braces?

Yes, but the guard needs to allow for brackets and moving teeth. Tell the dentist and your orthodontic provider about the sport. They can suggest an appropriate design and how often it may need to be checked or replaced.

How long will a custom guard last?

It depends on wear and growth. A guard may last a season or longer for some children, but growing mouths often need replacements more frequently. Check fit regularly and replace any guard that is damaged or loose.

What should we do if a tooth is knocked out during a game?

If it is a permanent tooth, handle it by the crown, keep it moist and seek dental help immediately. Do not replant a baby tooth. For serious head injury or uncontrolled bleeding, seek emergency medical care first.

Will a mouthguard affect my child’s breathing?

A well-fitted guard should allow comfortable breathing. Bulky or poorly fitted guards are more likely to interfere. Let the dentist know if your child finds breathing or speaking difficult so the guard can be adjusted.
