Checkups that grow with them

Each visit gives a snapshot of how your child’s mouth is developing.

A children’s dental exam does more than check for cavities. The dentist watches how teeth are erupting, how the bite is forming, and whether habits such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing are affecting growth. Regular visits also help children become familiar with the dental office so future appointments feel routine rather than strange.

Windham Centre families can schedule their children’s checkups at our Port Dover office, often alongside a cleaning. Parents are welcome to share concerns, ask questions about brushing or diet, and leave with practical advice suited to their child’s age and stage. Brothers and sisters can often be seen on the same trip.

Before the checkup

A little preparation helps the exam go smoothly.

  • Gather health and dental history

Bring a list of any medications, allergies and health conditions, along with details of past dental treatment or injuries. If your child has seen another dentist, previous X-rays or notes can be helpful. Jot down questions you want to ask, such as concerns about a tooth that looks discoloured or a baby tooth that seems slow to fall out.

  • Talk to your child about the visit

Explain to your child that the dentist will count and look at their teeth to make sure they are healthy. Reading a picture book about dental visits or practising opening wide at home can help. Try to schedule the appointment when your child is usually rested, and avoid using the visit as a threat or reward.

During the exam

The dentist looks at the whole mouth, not just the teeth.

Teeth, gums and soft tissues

Each tooth is checked for decay, and the gums, tongue, cheeks and palate are examined for anything unusual. X-rays may be recommended at certain intervals, based on your child’s age and cavity risk, to see between teeth and below the gums. The dentist will explain why any images are suggested and what they can reveal.

Growth, bite and habits

The dentist also notes how baby teeth are being replaced, whether there is enough space for adult teeth, and how the upper and lower jaws meet. Habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting or grinding are discussed if they seem relevant. Early observations can guide whether monitoring or an orthodontic consultation might eventually be useful.

Advice for home

Practical guidance can make daily routines easier.

Brushing help at different ages

Young children usually need help brushing until they can manage thoroughly on their own, often around the time they can tie their shoes. The dentist or hygienist can show you how to position your child and how much fluoride toothpaste to use. Flossing becomes important once teeth begin to touch, and they can show you simple techniques.

Food, drinks and snacking

Frequent snacking and sipping sweet drinks give cavity-causing bacteria many opportunities to attack enamel. Offering water between meals and saving treats for mealtimes can reduce risk. The team can discuss what your child typically eats and drinks and suggest realistic changes that fit family life on busy weekdays, school lunches and long, busy days outdoors in summer.

Planning ahead

Each exam sets up the next stage of care.

  1. Follow-up for any findings

If the dentist finds a cavity, a developing bite issue or another concern, they will explain the options and whether treatment is needed now or can be monitored. You can ask about the timing of any recommended care and how to prepare your child. Written notes can help you remember the details after you leave.

  2. Setting a recall schedule

Most children are seen on a regular recall schedule, though the interval may vary based on cavity risk and development. The team will suggest when to return. Keeping consistent appointments helps catch small problems early and builds a record of your child’s growth that informs future decisions about their care, from sealants to orthodontic timing.

Planning your appointment

Booking checkups from Windham Centre.

Contact our Port Dover office to arrange a children’s exam. Let the team know your child’s age, whether this is their first visit and any concerns you have noticed at home.

If you have several children, ask whether their appointments can be scheduled close together so the family makes fewer trips into Port Dover.

Children’s checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the dentist may recommend a different schedule based on cavity risk, growth and any ongoing concerns. Ask what interval suits your child after the first assessment, and whether it may change as they grow.

Will my child need X-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. X-rays are recommended based on age, risk of decay and the need to check development below the gums. The dentist will explain when images are suggested and why they would be useful. You are always welcome to ask questions first.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are generally welcome to stay, especially for younger children. Ask the team how best to support your child in the room, since some children respond better when a parent sits quietly nearby and lets the dentist lead the conversation.

What if my child refuses to open their mouth?

This is common, especially at early visits. The team can take things slowly and try again. Even a brief look and a positive experience can be valuable. Mention any worries ahead of time so the approach can be adapted.

When should we ask about orthodontics?

The dentist monitors bite and spacing at regular exams. If concerns arise, they may suggest an early orthodontic assessment. You can also raise questions at any checkup if you notice crowding or unusual bite patterns.
