Checkups that grow with your child

Each exam is a chance to see how a child’s mouth is developing.

A children’s dental exam looks at more than cavities. The dentist checks how teeth are coming in, how the bite is forming, how gums look and whether habits like thumb sucking or grinding are leaving marks. Regular visits build a record that makes changes easier to notice from one year to the next.

Many families in Vanessa fit checkups around school days and the farm calendar, and our Port Dover office sees children of every age. Parents are welcome to ask questions throughout, and the team adjusts its pace and explanations to suit each child’s comfort level on the day.

Before the visit

A little preparation makes the exam smoother.

  • Information to bring

Bring your child’s health information, including allergies, medications and any conditions a dentist should know about. If you have noticed sensitivity, a dark spot, bleeding gums or a tooth that seems late to arrive or slow to fall out, jot it down beforehand. Those observations guide where the dentist looks most carefully and which questions they ask you.

  • Talking about the appointment

Describe the visit simply: someone will count and look at their teeth, and maybe polish them so they shine. Keep the tone matter-of-fact and try not to pass on any worries of your own. Picture books or short videos about visiting the dentist can help younger children know what to expect before they ever sit in the chair.

During the exam

The dentist works through the mouth one area at a time.

  1. Teeth, gums and bite

Each tooth is checked for decay, wear and developmental changes. The dentist looks at the gums and soft tissues, how upper and lower teeth meet and whether there seems to be enough room for adult teeth. Children are often invited to hold a mirror or count along, which helps them feel part of the process rather than simply having it done to them.

  2. X-rays when they are useful

X-rays are not taken at every visit. The dentist recommends them based on your child’s age, cavity risk and what needs to be seen, such as decay between teeth or the position of developing adult teeth beneath the gums. Ask why they are suggested if you would like to understand the reasoning, and mention any previous images taken elsewhere.

Discussing findings

You leave knowing how things look and what comes next.

What the dentist explains

After examining your child, the dentist explains what they saw in plain language. That might be healthy teeth and a reminder about brushing, an early spot to keep an eye on, or a cavity that needs attention. You can ask about timing, choices and what a recommended treatment would actually involve for a child of that age.

Preventive steps that may be suggested

Depending on your child’s needs, the dentist may suggest fluoride treatment, sealants on back teeth or a follow-up to monitor a habit or developing bite. For some children, a referral for orthodontic or other specialized assessment may be raised, with clear reasons given for the suggestion. You are free to take time to think it over.

Between checkups

Good habits at home carry over to the next visit.

Daily brushing help

Young children usually need help brushing well, often until they can write their name neatly or tie their own shoes. Use a fluoride toothpaste in an age-appropriate amount and brush twice a day. Start flossing once teeth touch. Water between meals and fewer sticky snacks help protect teeth in the months between visits, and a consistent bedtime routine makes brushing easier to keep up.

When to call early

Call the office if your child has tooth pain, swelling, a knocked or broken tooth, or a change that worries you. Waiting for the next scheduled checkup is not necessary when something seems wrong. The team can advise you by phone, explain whether it can wait and arrange a visit if one is needed sooner.

Booking a checkup from Vanessa

Phone our Port Dover office to book your child’s exam. Let the team know their age, whether it is their first visit with us and any concerns you have noticed at home since their last checkup.

Choosing a time when your child is usually rested, rather than tired or hungry after a long day, can make the appointment easier for everyone.

Kids’ checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen about twice a year, but the right interval depends on their cavity risk, development and any ongoing concerns. The dentist will recommend a schedule after looking at your child’s teeth, history and home routine, and may adjust it over time.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are generally welcome to stay, especially with younger children who feel more secure with a familiar face nearby. Some older children enjoy a little independence. Discuss what works best for your child with the team when you arrive.

Does my child need X-rays every visit?

No. X-rays are recommended based on individual need, such as checking for decay between teeth or watching how adult teeth are developing. The dentist can explain why they are suggested at any particular visit and how often they are likely to be needed.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

That happens, particularly with young or nervous children. The team takes a gentle, patient approach and may do a shorter exam that day. Building comfort over several visits is often more useful than pushing for a complete exam all at once.

Are sealants checked at exams?

Yes. If your child already has sealants, the dentist looks to see that they are intact and still covering the deep grooves. Worn or chipped sealants can often be touched up, which keeps the protection working on the back teeth.
