Checking growth as well as teeth

A child’s checkup looks ahead as much as it looks for problems.

Children’s mouths change quickly. New teeth arrive, baby teeth loosen, jaws grow and habits such as thumb sucking can influence how everything fits together. A regular exam is a chance to catch decay early, follow development and give parents practical advice for the stage their child has reached.

Renton families visit our Port Dover office for these checkups. The dentist and hygienist adjust the pace and explanations to your child’s age and temperament, and there is time at the end for parents to ask about brushing, diet, sports or anything that has come up since the last visit.

Before the checkup

A little preparation gives the visit a good start.

  • Share health and habit information

Let the office know about any medical conditions, allergies or medications, and mention habits such as thumb sucking, pacifier use, mouth breathing or grinding. If your child has had a fall, a toothache or a change in eating, include that too. These details help the dentist focus on what matters for your child at this point.

  • Set a positive tone at home

Speak about the visit in a relaxed, matter-of-fact way. Some families read a picture book about the dentist or practise opening wide at home. Avoid promising that nothing will happen or describing anything as scary. Choosing a time of day when your child is usually rested can make a real difference to how the visit goes.

What is checked

The dentist builds a picture of current health and future growth.

Teeth, gums and soft tissues

Each tooth is checked for signs of decay, and the gums, tongue and cheeks are looked at for anything unusual. The hygienist may clean the teeth and point out areas where plaque tends to build up. X-rays are sometimes recommended, depending on age and risk, to look between teeth and at developing adult teeth below the gums.

Bite and development

The dentist notes how the upper and lower teeth meet, whether there is enough room for incoming teeth and whether baby teeth are being lost in a typical order. Any early signs that an orthodontic opinion might be useful are discussed. Many findings simply need watching, and the dentist will say when that is the case.

Talking with parents

The conversation after the exam is as important as the exam itself.

Explaining findings clearly

The dentist will explain what was seen in plain terms, including anything that needs treatment, anything to keep an eye on and anything that looks healthy. Ask about the reasoning behind each recommendation. If treatment is suggested, you can discuss timing and options without having to decide everything before you leave. Notes can be taken home to review.

Tailored prevention advice

Advice usually covers brushing technique, how much toothpaste to use, flossing once teeth touch, snack and drink habits and whether sealants or fluoride may help. For active children, the team may mention mouthguards. Advice is tailored to your child’s age, so it changes as they grow and take on more of their own care and routines.

Keeping a routine

Regular visits make each checkup quicker and more familiar.

  1. Recall timing

The dentist will suggest how often your child should return based on their risk and development. Some children need more frequent visits for a period, while others can follow a standard interval. Booking the next checkup before leaving can help Renton families plan the trip around school, farm work or other commitments well in advance.

  2. Building independence

As children grow, encourage them to answer some questions themselves and to show the hygienist how they brush. This builds confidence and responsibility. Keep supervising brushing until they can do a thorough job, which for many children is later than parents expect, and continue checking now and then afterward. A quick look at bedtime is often enough.

Children’s checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

It depends on your child’s risk of decay and their development. Many children are seen at regular intervals, but some need more frequent visits for a time. The dentist will recommend a schedule after the exam.

Will my child need X-rays?

Not at every visit. X-rays may be recommended based on age, the risk of cavities between teeth or to check developing adult teeth. The dentist will explain why they are suggested when they are needed.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are commonly welcome, particularly for younger children. Ask the office about arrangements. Some older children prefer a bit of independence, and the team can help you decide what suits your child at each age.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

It happens, especially with young or nervous children. The team works patiently and may try again later in the visit or at a future appointment. Familiarity often helps, so even a partial first exam can be useful.

Is it too early to think about braces?

The dentist watches bite development at each exam and will mention if an orthodontic assessment seems worthwhile. Some issues are best checked early, while many simply need monitoring as the adult teeth come in over time.
