Checkups that grow with your child

Each exam is a snapshot of a smile that keeps changing.

Between toddlerhood and the teen years, a child’s mouth changes constantly. Baby teeth come and go, adult molars arrive and the jaws grow. Regular exams let the dentist check for decay, watch how teeth are coming in and offer guidance on brushing, diet and habits that suits your child’s current stage.

Children from Peacock Point families can have their checkups at our Port Dover office. If your family splits time between the lake and another home, let the team know where previous exams were done so records can be shared and nothing is overlooked from one visit to the next.

Before the exam

A little preparation makes the checkup smoother.

  1. Gather health and dental history

Bring details of any medical conditions, medications and allergies, along with information about past dental visits or treatment. Mention concerns you have noticed, such as a tooth that looks discoloured, thumb sucking or difficulty brushing certain areas. Sharing this before the exam helps the dentist and hygienist focus on what matters most for your child.

  2. Talk about the visit at home

Describe the visit in a calm, matter-of-fact way. Explain that the dentist will count and look at their teeth and may take pictures. Reading a story about the dentist or practising opening wide at home can help younger children. Let the team know if your child has had a difficult experience or needs extra time.

What is checked

The dentist looks at more than cavities.

Teeth, gums and soft tissues

The examination checks each tooth for decay or wear, looks at the gums for signs of inflammation and checks the tongue, cheeks and palate. X-rays may be recommended at certain ages or when there is a specific concern, such as hidden decay between teeth. The dentist will explain why any images are suggested before they are taken.

Growth, bite and development

The dentist also observes how teeth are erupting, whether there is enough room for adult teeth and how the upper and lower jaws meet. Habits such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing may be discussed. If anything suggests a need for an orthodontic opinion, the dentist can explain the timing and options for further assessment.

Findings

Leave the appointment knowing where things stand.

Understand what was found

Ask the dentist to explain the findings in plain language, including what looks healthy and what needs attention. If a concern was noticed, find out whether it should be treated, monitored or simply kept clean. Older children may benefit from hearing the explanation themselves, which can help them take more ownership of their own brushing routine.

Plan any treatment needed

If treatment is recommended, ask about the reason, the timing and what the appointment would involve. Some issues can wait for a convenient time, while others are better addressed soon. Discuss comfort strategies if your child is nervous, and find out whether preventive steps such as sealants or fluoride would be appropriate at this stage.

Between visits

Good habits at home make each checkup easier.

  • Build brushing and flossing habits

Help your child brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste suited to their age, and supervise until they can do it thoroughly on their own. Introduce flossing once teeth touch. Water between meals and limited sugary snacks support healthy teeth. Summer routines at the lake can slip, so a simple reminder chart may help keep brushing on track.

  • Keep up with regular exams

The dentist will suggest how often your child should return based on their risk of cavities and development. Book the next exam before leaving if possible, keeping school and seasonal schedules in mind. Contact the office between visits if your child has tooth pain, a dental injury or a change you are unsure about.

Children’s exam questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the dentist will recommend timing based on your child’s cavity risk, development and any ongoing concerns. Some children benefit from more frequent visits, while others may be seen less often.

Will my child need X-rays?

Not at every visit. X-rays may be recommended to check between teeth, look at developing adult teeth or investigate a specific concern. The dentist will explain the reason and frequency based on your child’s situation.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are often welcome during children’s exams. Ask when booking about the usual approach. Your calm presence can reassure younger children, while older children may prefer some independence during their appointment.

What if my child refuses to open their mouth?

This is common, especially with young children. The team can try gentle approaches and may suggest a shorter introductory visit. Let them know ahead of time if your child is likely to be hesitant.

Can exams be scheduled around our summer stay?

Let the office know when your family is usually at Peacock Point. The team can discuss available times, and if another dentist also sees your child, sharing records helps avoid duplicate X-rays or gaps in care.
