Growing, checked, encouraged

Regular exams follow a child’s mouth as it changes.

Between the first baby tooth and the last adult molar, a child’s mouth changes constantly. Routine examinations let the dentist watch tooth development, spot early decay, check how the bite is forming and offer advice that suits each stage. They also help children grow comfortable with dental visits long before anything needs fixing.

Children from Nixon are welcome at our Port Dover office, whether this is their first checkup or one of many. Parents can expect clear explanations of what the dentist sees and practical tips for brushing, snacks and habits that suit the family’s routine at home.

Getting ready

A little preparation helps the appointment feel routine.

  1. Pick a good time of day

Young children often do better earlier in the day or after a nap, when they are less tired and more cooperative. Try to avoid booking right before a usual mealtime. If you are travelling with several children, ask whether appointments can be grouped, and plan the outing so no one feels rushed once you arrive at the office.

  2. Talk about it positively

Describe the dentist as someone who counts and checks teeth to keep them strong and healthy. Reading a picture book about the dentist or playing a pretend checkup at home can make the experience familiar. Try not to share your own worries about dental care, since children often pick up on adult nervousness more than we realize.

During the exam

The dentist looks at the whole mouth, not only the teeth.

Teeth, gums and soft tissues

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, looks at the gums and examines the tongue, cheeks and palate for anything unusual. X-rays may be suggested when they would provide information that cannot be seen directly, based on the child’s age and risk of cavities. You will be told what the images are for before they are taken.

Growth, bite and habits

As children grow, the dentist watches how baby teeth are being lost, how adult teeth are arriving and whether the jaws are developing in balance. Thumb sucking, mouth breathing or grinding may be discussed if they seem to be affecting the teeth. Early observations can guide the timing of a further assessment if one is needed.

Advice for home

Practical guidance follows every examination.

Brushing help that fits their age

Most children need help brushing until their coordination improves, often well into the early school years. The team can show you how to position yourself, how much toothpaste suits your child’s age and how to reach the back molars. Flossing becomes important once teeth begin to touch, and a demonstration can make it far less of a struggle.

Food and drink choices

Frequent sipping on juice, milk at bedtime and sticky snacks can increase cavity risk. Water between meals is a helpful habit to build early. The team will discuss your child’s diet without judgment, focusing on realistic changes for busy households, including what to pack for school lunches, sports days or long afternoons outdoors in the country.

Planning ahead

Leave knowing what comes next.

  • Follow-up recommendations

Depending on what is found, the dentist may suggest a cleaning, sealants, fluoride or treatment for a cavity. You might also hear about timing for an orthodontic assessment as adult teeth come in. Ask how often your child should return; the interval can vary with age, risk of decay and any concerns raised at the appointment.

  • When to call between checkups

Contact the office if your child complains of tooth pain, has facial or gum swelling, injures a tooth or develops a mouth sore that does not heal within a couple of weeks. Changes like these should not wait for the next routine visit. Describe the problem clearly on the phone so the team can advise on how soon to come in.

Planning your appointment

Call our Port Dover office to book a children’s exam and mention any questions you already have. Let the team know if your child has special health needs or has had a difficult dental visit before, so the appointment can be paced well.

Children’s exam questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the right frequency depends on their age, decay risk and development. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on what is found and explain the reasoning, so you can plan visits that fit your family’s calendar.

Will my child need X-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. X-rays are recommended based on age, risk and specific concerns, such as possible decay between teeth. The dentist will explain why images would be useful before taking them and what information they are expected to provide for your child’s care.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

That happens, especially with toddlers and preschoolers. The team will be patient and may try a different approach, such as a knee-to-knee exam with a parent. Sometimes a short, positive visit is the real goal, and the full examination follows next time.

Can siblings be seen on the same day?

Ask when booking. Grouping appointments may be possible depending on availability, which can be helpful for families travelling in from rural areas. Let the team know each child’s age and any concerns so enough time can be set aside for everyone.

When does the dentist start talking about braces?

The dentist watches bite development at every visit. If a concern appears, such as crowding or a crossbite, they may suggest an early orthodontic assessment. Timing depends on the individual child and how their teeth are developing rather than one fixed age.
