Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsCheckups that grow with your child
Between toddlerhood and the teen years, a child’s mouth goes through constant change. Baby teeth arrive and fall out, adult molars erupt, the jaws grow and habits develop. Regular exams give the dentist a chance to follow that progress, catch small issues early and offer guidance that matches your child’s stage.
Children from Jarvis are welcome at our Port Dover office for routine checkups. Parents can stay involved, share concerns and leave with practical advice for brushing, diet and protecting teeth at home.

Before the checkup
Explain that the dentist will count and look at their teeth and help keep them strong. Reading a picture book about the dentist or practising opening wide at home can help younger children. Keep the tone light and matter-of-fact, and avoid promising that nothing will be felt, since honesty builds trust.
Note any medical conditions, medicines and allergies, along with concerns such as thumb sucking, grinding or a tooth that seems discoloured. If your child has had dental care elsewhere, bring the records or the previous clinic’s details. Mention anything that has made past visits difficult so the team can adjust its approach.
During the exam
The dentist examines each tooth for decay, checks the gums for inflammation and looks at the tongue, cheeks and palate. X-rays may be recommended at certain ages or when there is a specific concern, based on your child’s individual risk. Cleaning and fluoride may be offered during the same visit.
The dentist also watches how teeth are coming in, whether there is enough space and how the upper and lower teeth meet. Habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing may be discussed. If anything suggests an orthodontic assessment or other follow-up would help, the reasons will be explained to you.
Talking it over
After the exam, the dentist will share what looks healthy and anything that needs attention. If treatment is suggested, ask about its urgency, the options and how to prepare your child. You are welcome to take time to think before booking, unless there is pain or infection that needs prompt care.
Guidance changes as children grow, from how much toothpaste to use for toddlers to sports protection for older kids. Ask about brushing help, snacks and drinks, and when your child might be ready to brush alone. Practical advice tailored to your family is often the most valuable part of the visit.
Between visits
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and help your child floss where teeth touch. Make brushing part of the routine at the same times each day. Offer water between meals and keep sweet treats with mealtimes rather than spread through the day. Praise effort, especially for younger children learning the skill.
Contact the office before the next routine visit if your child complains of tooth pain, has swelling, chips a tooth or a baby tooth is loose for a long time with the adult tooth coming in behind it. Prompt calls help small issues get attention before they become more involved.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a children’s exam. Let the team know your child’s age, any concerns and whether siblings also need checkups so appointments can be discussed together.
Choose a time when your child is usually well rested and fed, and bring previous dental records if available.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many children are seen regularly through the year, but the interval depends on individual risk. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your child’s teeth, history and habits, and may adjust it over time.
Not at every visit. X-rays are recommended based on age, risk and specific concerns, such as checking between back teeth or looking at developing adult teeth. The dentist will explain the reason before taking them.
Parents are generally welcome, particularly with younger children. Some older children prefer some independence. Talk with the team about what works best for your child and their comfort.
That is fairly common, especially early on. The team will go at your child’s pace and may keep the first visit short. Positive experiences over time often help children become more comfortable.
The focus shifts somewhat, with attention to wisdom teeth, orthodontic needs, sports protection and independent home care. Teens can be encouraged to ask their own questions during the appointment.
Children’s cleanings remove plaque, polish teeth and teach good habits. Learn how Jarvis kids are made comfortable and how parents can support brushing between visits.
An early look at a child’s bite can flag crowding, crossbites or habits worth watching. Jarvis parents can learn what an assessment covers and when follow-up is advised.
