Checking in as they grow

Each checkup is a snapshot of a smile that keeps changing.

Between toddlerhood and the teenage years, a child loses twenty baby teeth and gains a full set of adult teeth, while the jaws grow and the bite develops. Regular dental exams let the dentist follow that progress, catch decay early and spot developmental issues that are easier to manage when found in good time.

Hillcrest parents can book exams for their children at our Port Dover office. Each visit is adjusted to the child’s age and comfort, and you will hear what the dentist found, what to keep doing at home and when to return, in language that makes sense to you and your child.

Before the visit

A little preparation makes the exam feel familiar.

  1. Talking about the checkup

Describe the checkup in a positive, matter-of-fact way. You might say the dentist will count teeth and make sure they are healthy. Reading a picture book or role-playing with a toothbrush can help younger children. Avoid promising that nothing will happen, since a calm, honest explanation usually builds more trust than reassurance that may not hold.

  2. Information to bring

Bring details of any medical conditions, medications and allergies, along with questions about habits like thumb sucking, teething or grinding. Note any spots, sensitivity or injuries you have seen since the last visit. If your child has had a difficult dental experience before, let the team know so they can plan a gentler approach this time.

During the exam

The dentist looks at more than cavities.

  • Teeth, gums and soft tissues

The exam includes checking each tooth for decay, looking at the gums for inflammation and examining the tongue, cheeks and palate. Plaque build-up shows how brushing is going. X-rays may be recommended at certain ages or if there is a concern about hidden decay or developing teeth, with the reasoning explained before they are taken.

  • Growth, bite and spacing

The dentist will also look at how the teeth come together, whether there is enough space for adult teeth and whether teeth are coming in at the expected time. Habits such as mouth breathing or prolonged thumb sucking may be discussed. Early observation does not always mean treatment, but it helps the family plan ahead.

Talking it through

Parents leave with a clear picture and practical tips.

Understanding the findings

After the exam, the dentist explains what they saw in plain terms. If treatment is needed, ask about the urgency, the options and how the appointment would work for your child. If everything looks healthy, ask what to watch for before the next visit. You are welcome to request written notes to share with another caregiver.

Advice tailored to your child

Advice may include brushing technique, how much toothpaste to use, flossing, snacking patterns and protecting teeth during sports. The suggestions should fit your child’s age and abilities. If a routine seems difficult to follow at home, say so, and the team can help you find a more realistic approach. Small, steady improvements usually last longer than an ambitious routine that is hard to keep up.

Between checkups

Good habits at home make each visit easier.

Keeping up the routine

Help with brushing until your child has the dexterity to do it well, which for many children is later than parents expect. Encourage water between meals and keep sugary treats to mealtimes. Praise effort rather than perfection. These everyday habits often matter more to a child’s dental health than anything that happens at the checkup itself.

When to call sooner

Call before the next scheduled exam if your child has a toothache, swelling, a knocked or broken tooth, or a spot that seems to be growing. Teeth that are coming in unusually or not at all may also be worth a call. The team can advise whether an earlier appointment is appropriate for your child.

Planning your appointment

Planning exams for your Hillcrest family.

Contact our Port Dover office to schedule your child’s exam. If you have several children, ask whether appointments can be arranged close together to make the trip more convenient for everyone.

Mention your child’s age and any concerns when booking so the team can allow the right amount of time for the visit.

Questions about kids’ checkups

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the right frequency depends on their risk of decay and development. The dentist will recommend a schedule after assessing your child and may suggest more frequent visits if there are concerns.

Will my child need X-rays every visit?

No. X-rays are recommended based on age, risk and specific concerns rather than taken routinely at every appointment. The dentist will explain why an image is useful before taking it and answer your questions about safety.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are often welcome to stay, especially with younger children. Ask the team about their approach. Some older children prefer a little independence, and the team can discuss what tends to work best for your child.

What if my child refuses to open their mouth?

This happens, particularly at early visits. The team may try a slower pace, a knee-to-knee exam for toddlers or simply a brief introduction. Building comfort over several visits is often more productive than pushing for a complete exam at once.

Does the exam include a cleaning?

Many checkups are paired with a cleaning, but that depends on how the appointment is booked and your child’s needs. Ask when scheduling whether both will happen during the same visit, so you know how long to plan for.
