Checkups that grow with your child

Each exam is a snapshot of how your child’s mouth is developing.

Children’s teeth and jaws change constantly. Regular exams let the dentist follow tooth eruption, check for early decay, look at how the bite is forming and talk with parents about habits such as thumb sucking or bedtime bottles. Visits also give children practice with the dental chair in a low-pressure setting.

Our Port Dover practice sees children from Fishers Glen and nearby shoreline communities. A checkup is a good time to bring up anything you have noticed at home, from a wobbly tooth to bleeding gums, and to ask what you should be watching for until the next visit.

Before the visit

A little preparation sets a positive tone.

  1. Talk about the visit simply

Describe the checkup as a visit where the dentist counts and looks at teeth and the hygienist helps keep them clean. Keep explanations short and avoid words that suggest pain. Books or pretend play with a toothbrush can help younger children feel familiar with the idea before they arrive. Older children may simply want to know how long it will take.

  2. Bring the right information

Bring details of any medical conditions, medications and allergies, along with records from a previous dentist if your child has been seen elsewhere. Note any concerns, such as discoloured teeth, a sore spot, mouth breathing or grinding, so they are not forgotten once the appointment is underway. A quick photo of a spot that worries you can also be useful to show the dentist.

During the exam

The dentist looks at more than cavities.

Teeth and gums

Each tooth is checked for signs of decay, and the gums are looked at for redness or bleeding. Depending on age and risk, X-rays may be recommended to see between teeth or check developing adult teeth. The hygienist may polish teeth and apply fluoride, explaining each step so your child knows what to expect. Breaks are fine whenever needed.

Bite and development

As children grow, the dentist watches how teeth come in, whether there is enough space and how upper and lower teeth meet. Early signs of crowding, crossbites or habits affecting tooth position may be noted. Not every finding needs action right away, and the dentist can explain what simply needs monitoring. Records from each visit help show how things are changing.

Discussing findings

Parents leave with a clear picture of what was found.

Understanding recommendations

The dentist will review the exam with you, including any areas of concern and suggestions for home care. Ask what is urgent, what can wait and what signs would mean an earlier visit is needed. If your child is old enough, they can be included in the conversation in age-appropriate terms. Hearing praise for good brushing goes a long way.

Planning any treatment

If a filling, sealant or other care is recommended, ask how many visits are involved and how the team will help your child feel comfortable. You may be offered a separate appointment for treatment so your child does not have to manage everything at once, especially after a first exam. That second visit can be booked before you leave the office.

Between checkups

Daily routines carry the benefits of each visit forward.

  • Brushing help and diet

Brush your child’s teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, helping until they can reach every surface well. Start flossing once teeth touch. Keep sweet snacks and drinks to mealtimes where possible, and avoid putting a child to bed with milk or juice, which can bathe teeth in sugar overnight. Water is the best drink between meals.

  • Knowing when to call

Call the office if your child complains of a toothache, has swelling, injures a tooth or you notice a dark spot or broken tooth. The team will ask about symptoms and discuss timing. Otherwise, follow the recall interval recommended for your child, which may differ based on their individual cavity risk. Siblings do not always need the same schedule.

Contact our Port Dover office to book your child’s exam. Mention their age, whether this is their first visit with us and any concerns you would like the dentist to look at.

Morning appointments sometimes suit younger children better; let the team know what time of day your child tends to be most settled.

Children’s checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the recommended timing depends on their risk of decay and development. The dentist will suggest a recall schedule after assessing your child’s teeth, gums and habits. That interval may change as they grow.

Will my child need X-rays?

X-rays are recommended based on age, risk and what the dentist needs to see, such as areas between teeth. Not every child needs them at every visit. Ask the dentist to explain the reason when they are suggested.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

That happens, especially with young children. The team will go at your child’s pace and may try a shorter look or a knee-to-knee exam for toddlers. A positive experience is often more important than completing everything at one visit.

Can siblings be seen at the same time?

Ask when booking whether back-to-back appointments are available. Grouping visits can make the trip from Fishers Glen more convenient for busy families, subject to scheduling. Let the team know each child’s age and any concerns so enough time is set aside for everyone.

Should I bring up thumb sucking?

Yes. The dentist can check whether the habit is affecting tooth position and offer age-appropriate guidance. Many children stop on their own, but it is useful to have the dentist monitor the effect on developing teeth.
