Checkups that grow with your child

Each exam is a snapshot of how your child’s mouth is developing.

A child’s mouth changes quickly. Baby teeth arrive and loosen, adult teeth come in at different times and the jaw continues to grow. Regular exams let the dentist follow those changes, spot early decay and answer questions about habits, brushing and diet before small concerns turn into bigger ones.

Parents in Cultus can book their children’s checkups at our Port Dover office and, where it suits, ask about coordinating several family members on the same trip. We aim to keep each visit friendly and predictable so your child comes to see the dental chair as an ordinary part of growing up.

Before the visit

A little preparation helps the exam go smoothly.

  1. Share health and history details

When booking, mention any medical conditions, allergies, medications or previous dental treatment. Tell the team if your child has had a fall involving the mouth, notices sensitivity or has a habit such as thumb sucking. These details help the dentist focus on what matters most for your child at this stage. Even small changes since the last visit are worth noting.

  2. Set positive expectations

Talk about the visit in a relaxed, matter-of-fact way. Explain that the dentist will count teeth, look at them with a small mirror and maybe take pictures. Avoid promising that nothing will be uncomfortable, and instead let your child know they can ask questions and that you will be nearby throughout. Calm, ordinary language works better than big reassurances.

What the dentist checks

The examination covers more than looking for cavities.

  • Teeth, gums and bite

The dentist checks each tooth for signs of decay, looks at the gums and soft tissues and observes how the upper and lower teeth fit together. They watch for baby teeth that are loose too early or staying too long, and for adult teeth that seem to be coming in out of position. These observations build a record of how your child is growing.

  • X-rays when appropriate

Depending on your child’s age, risk of decay and dental history, X-rays may be suggested to look between teeth or check developing adult teeth. The dentist will explain why images are recommended and what information they hope to gain. You can always ask about how often X-rays are needed for your child. Not every checkup includes them.

Guidance for parents

Practical advice is tailored to your child’s stage.

Brushing help by age

Younger children usually need hands-on help with brushing, and even older kids benefit from a parent checking their work. The dentist or hygienist can show you how to angle the brush, how much toothpaste to use and when to begin flossing between teeth that touch. Demonstrations are often easier to remember than written instructions. Feel free to practise in front of the hygienist.

Snacks, drinks and habits

How often a child snacks or sips sweet drinks can matter as much as the amount of sugar. Water between meals and keeping treats with mealtimes may lower the risk of cavities. If your child sucks a thumb, uses a soother or grinds at night, ask whether it is affecting their teeth or bite. Most habits are simply monitored at first.

Planning ahead

Leave the appointment knowing what comes next.

Follow-up treatment if needed

If the dentist finds a cavity or recommends sealants, fluoride or a further assessment, ask for a clear explanation of why and when. Some findings simply need monitoring. Knowing which concerns are pressing and which can wait helps you plan around school, activities and the drive in from home. Ask for any written notes you would find useful.

Choosing the next visit

Most children benefit from regular checkups, but the right interval depends on their individual risk. Ask the dentist how often your child should be seen. Booking the next visit before you leave can make it easier to keep a consistent routine, particularly if you are coordinating appointments for several children. A reminder call or note can also help.

Family visits from Cultus

Call our Port Dover office to book a children’s exam. If you would like siblings seen on the same day, mention it and the team will let you know what scheduling options are available.

Bring a note of your child’s allergies, a list of medications and any records from previous dental visits. Arriving a few minutes early helps younger children settle.

Questions about children’s checkups

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the dentist will recommend a schedule based on your child’s risk of decay, development and dental history. Some children benefit from more frequent visits, while others do well with a longer gap.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are generally welcome to stay with younger children. Some older kids prefer a little independence. Let the team know what works for your family, and they will help your child feel at ease whichever arrangement you choose.

Does my child need X-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. The dentist recommends X-rays based on individual need, such as risk of cavities or checking developing teeth. Ask why images are being suggested and how often they are likely to be needed as your child grows.

What if my child refuses to open their mouth?

This is not unusual. The team will be patient and may try a different approach or a shorter visit. Building comfort gradually can help, and a later appointment can often complete what was not possible.

Is a cleaning included with the exam?

Many checkup visits include a cleaning, but this can vary with age and need. Ask when booking what the appointment will include so you know what to expect for your child and how much time to allow.
