Checkups that grow with them

Each exam is a snapshot of a mouth that keeps changing.

Between toddlerhood and the teen years, a child’s mouth goes through a remarkable amount of change. Baby teeth come in and fall out, adult teeth arrive and the jaws grow. Regular dental exams let the team follow that development, find problems while they are small and help children grow used to dental visits.

Boston families can book children’s exams at our Port Dover office. When you call, mention your child’s age, when they last saw a dentist and any concerns such as sensitivity, crowding or habits, so the appointment can be planned with those particular points in mind.

Before the checkup

A relaxed lead-up makes the exam easier for everyone.

  1. Setting a positive tone

Talk about the visit in a simple, upbeat way, explaining that the dentist will count and look at their teeth to make sure they are healthy. Reading a picture book about the dentist or practising opening wide at home can help younger children. Try to avoid passing on your own worries, as children often pick up on adult tension quickly.

  2. Information to bring

Note any medical conditions, allergies and medications, along with questions about thumb sucking, teething, grinding or a tooth that looks different. If your child has had dental treatment elsewhere, bring any records you have or ask for them to be sent. These details help the team understand your child’s history and focus on what matters most.

During the exam

The dentist looks at today’s teeth and tomorrow’s development.

  • Teeth, gums and soft tissues

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, looks at the gums and examines the tongue, cheeks and palate. Plaque build-up and brushing patterns are noted, which often shows where a child is missing spots. X-rays may be recommended at certain ages or when there is a specific concern, and the reason will be explained to you before any are taken.

  • Growth and bite development

The team also watches how teeth are coming in, whether there is enough room for adult teeth and how the upper and lower jaws meet. Habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing may be discussed. Some findings simply need monitoring at later visits, while others may lead to suggestions about early orthodontic assessment or preventive treatment.

Talking about results

Clear explanations help parents make informed choices.

Understanding the findings

After the exam, the dentist will share what they saw and whether anything needs treatment or watching. Ask questions until you are comfortable with the explanation. If a filling or other care is recommended, find out how urgent it is and how it can be scheduled around school, sports and family routines without rushing anyone.

Preventive options to consider

Depending on your child’s risk of decay, fluoride treatment or sealants on back teeth may be suggested. The team can also offer advice on brushing technique, the right toothpaste amount for your child’s age and snack habits. These suggestions are tailored, so do not assume every child, or even every sibling, receives the same recommendations.

Between visits

Good habits at home make each checkup more straightforward.

Daily brushing and flossing

Help or supervise brushing until your child can do it thoroughly on their own, which is often later than parents expect. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and floss where teeth touch. Make it part of the bedtime routine, like bath time or a story, so it becomes a habit rather than a daily negotiation.

When to call before the next exam

Contact the office before the next scheduled exam if your child complains of tooth pain, has swelling, chips a tooth or has a knock to the mouth. Changes such as a new dark spot, or a baby tooth that seems stuck while an adult tooth comes in behind it, are also worth asking about sooner rather than later.

Planning your appointment

Scheduling an exam from Boston

Phone our Port Dover office to book your child’s dental exam. Share their age, any past dental care and current concerns, so the team can allow suitable time and plan the visit around your child.

If you have more than one child, ask whether their exams can be arranged close together to make the trip easier for the family.

Children’s exam questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a dental exam?

Many children are seen regularly throughout the year, but the right interval depends on their risk of decay and how their teeth are developing. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on what they find at each visit and adjust it over time.

Will my child need x-rays?

X-rays may be suggested to check between teeth or to look at developing adult teeth. They are not taken at every visit. The dentist will explain why they are recommended and how often they are likely to be needed for your child.

Can I stay with my child during the exam?

Parents are often welcome to stay, especially with younger children. Ask when booking. Some older children prefer a little independence, and the team can help you decide what works best for your child’s personality and comfort.

What if my child will not open their mouth?

This is not unusual, especially at first visits. The team is used to working patiently with children. Sometimes a short, gentle introduction is enough for one day, and a fuller exam happens at a later visit once the child is more comfortable.

Are sealants done at the exam?

Sealants may be recommended at an exam and placed then or at a separate short visit. The dentist will explain whether your child’s teeth would benefit, which teeth are candidates and when it would make sense to apply them.
