Small teeth, real decisions

Baby teeth with cavities still deserve careful attention.

It is easy to assume a cavity in a baby tooth does not matter because the tooth will eventually fall out. In reality, those teeth help children chew, speak and hold space for adult teeth, and untreated decay can become painful or infected. The right approach depends on the size of the cavity, the tooth involved and your child’s age.

Families from Nanticoke bring their children to our Port Dover office for cavity care. The dentist explains what was found in plain language, suggests options suited to the tooth and talks about how to keep your child comfortable during treatment.

Spotting decay

Cavities in children are not always obvious at home.

What parents may see

Early decay may appear as chalky white lines near the gums or brown spots in the grooves of back teeth. Many cavities are only visible on X-rays, especially between teeth. Regular checkups catch them earlier, when treatment tends to be smaller. If you notice a dark spot or a hole, mention it when booking.

What children may say

Young children may not describe tooth pain clearly. They might avoid chewing on one side, complain when eating sweets or cold food, or rub their cheek. Swelling of the gum, a pimple-like bump or a fever with facial pain should be reported promptly, since these can signal infection rather than a simple cavity.

Treatment choices

The size and depth of decay shape the plan.

From monitoring to fillings

Very early decay that has not broken through the enamel may sometimes be managed with fluoride, better brushing and closer monitoring. Once a cavity forms, a filling is commonly recommended to remove the decay and restore the tooth. Tooth-coloured materials are often used. Ask the dentist why a particular option suits your child’s tooth.

When larger repairs are needed

Large cavities in baby teeth may need a crown to hold the tooth together, and decay reaching the nerve may require pulp treatment. If a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be discussed, sometimes with a space maintainer. The timing of when the adult tooth is expected to arrive also influences which choice is most sensible.

Appointment day

A little preparation can make treatment easier.

  1. Preparing your child

Use simple, calm words when telling your child about the visit and avoid frightening phrases like needles or drilling. Let the team know about past experiences, sensitivities or anxiety. Scheduling a time of day when your child is usually rested and fed can help them cope better with sitting still in the chair.

  2. Comfort during treatment

The dentist can explain each step in child-friendly terms and use local anaesthetic to numb the tooth. For some children, nitrous oxide or other approaches may be discussed. After the appointment, watch that your child does not bite their numb lip or cheek, and offer soft food until the numbness wears off.

Preventing more

One cavity is a chance to strengthen habits.

  • Daily routines

Help or supervise brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste suited to your child’s age, and begin flossing where teeth touch. Limit frequent sipping of juice, milk at bedtime and sticky snacks between meals. Water between meals is a good default. Ask the hygienist for tips if your child resists brushing or needs a different technique.

  • Professional protection

Sealants on the chewing surfaces of back teeth and professional fluoride applications may be recommended for children at higher risk. Regular checkups allow new decay to be found early. Ask how often your child should be seen, since the right interval can depend on their history and current risk.

Before you book

Children and cavities

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Do cavities in baby teeth really need treatment?

Often yes. Baby teeth help with chewing and speech and hold space for adult teeth. Untreated decay can become painful or infected. The dentist will consider the size of the cavity and when the tooth is expected to fall out before recommending an approach.

Will my child need to be numbed?

Many fillings involve local anaesthetic to keep the tooth comfortable. Very small repairs may not. The dentist can explain what is planned and how numbing is done gently, and you can discuss any concerns before treatment begins.

Can I stay with my child during treatment?

Ask the team when booking. Parents are often welcome to stay, especially with younger children. The dentist may suggest how you can best support your child, such as staying calm and letting the team lead the conversation.

Why does my child get cavities when they brush?

Brushing helps, but diet frequency, saliva, tooth shape and missed areas all play a part. The hygienist can review technique and snacking patterns and suggest sealants or fluoride if your child appears to be at higher risk.

What if my child has a swollen face?

Facial swelling with tooth pain should be reported right away. If swelling is spreading quickly or your child has difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
