Small teeth, real decay

Baby teeth with cavities still matter to a growing child.

It can be tempting to think a cavity in a baby tooth is not worth treating because the tooth will fall out eventually. Yet many primary teeth stay in place for years, hold space for adult teeth and help children chew and speak. Untreated decay can grow, cause pain or lead to infection, which is harder on a child than an early repair.

Families from Long Point, whether there year-round or for the summer, can bring children to our Port Dover office to have a suspected cavity examined and to talk through treatment in terms a child can follow.

Spotting decay

Cavities in children are not always obvious.

Signs at home

Parents sometimes see a chalky white line near the gum, a brown or dark spot, or food repeatedly packing into one place. A child may avoid chewing on one side, complain when eating sweets or flinch with cold drinks. Some children cannot describe the feeling clearly and may simply seem fussy at mealtimes or reluctant to brush a particular area.

Why some cavities stay hidden

Decay often starts between back teeth where it is hard to see, which is why examinations and X-rays when appropriate are useful. A tooth can look fine from above while a cavity grows underneath. Regular checkups help find decay while it is small, when treatment is usually simpler and quicker for the child.

Explaining the plan

You will hear the options before any treatment begins.

What treatment may involve

Very early decay may sometimes be managed with fluoride and closer monitoring. Once a cavity has formed, a tooth-coloured filling is often suggested. Larger decay in a baby tooth may need a crown, and deep decay close to the nerve may need further treatment. The dentist will explain why one approach is recommended for that tooth.

Questions parents often ask

Ask how long the tooth is expected to stay, how many visits might be needed and how freezing is handled for children. If your child has had a difficult appointment before, say so. Understanding the reasons behind a plan helps parents explain it calmly at home and make an informed choice.

The appointment

Simple, honest preparation usually helps most.

  1. Preparing your child

Use calm, plain words. Saying the dentist will clean out a soft spot and fill it, so the tooth stays strong, is often enough. Avoid promising that nothing will be felt, and skip frightening words. Choose an appointment time when your child is rested and fed. A favourite comfort item from home may also help.

  2. During the filling

The team explains each step in child-friendly language and checks comfort as they go. If freezing is used, the cheek and lip may feel numb for a while afterward. Let the clinician know if your child needs pauses or has sensory sensitivities, so the appointment can be paced to keep things as manageable as possible.

Preventing more

Treatment is a good moment to strengthen daily habits.

  • After the visit

Watch that your child does not chew their numb lip or cheek until feeling returns. Offer soft foods if the area feels tender. Mild soreness can be normal, but contact the office if pain grows, swelling appears or the filling feels high. Keep the follow-up appointment if one was recommended for the treated tooth.

  • Lowering the risk of new cavities

Help with brushing until your child can do it thoroughly, use fluoride toothpaste in the amount suggested for their age and clean between teeth that touch. Limit frequent sipping of juice or sweet drinks, including on long summer days at the beach. Ask whether sealants or fluoride varnish would add protection.

Children’s cavity questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Do baby teeth really need fillings?

Often, yes. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and support chewing and speech. Untreated decay can lead to pain or infection. The dentist considers how long the tooth is expected to remain when recommending treatment.

Will my child need freezing?

It depends on the size and location of the cavity. Small areas sometimes need little or none, while deeper decay usually does. The dentist will explain comfort options suited to your child before starting.

Can I stay with my child during treatment?

Ask the team about the approach for your child’s visit. Many families find it helpful for a parent to be nearby, while some children cooperate more easily with less distraction. The plan can be discussed beforehand.

Why does my child get cavities when they brush every day?

Frequent snacking, sweet drinks, deep grooves in back teeth and brushing that misses certain areas can all contribute. The dentist or hygienist can look at the pattern and suggest specific changes for your child.

How soon should a cavity be treated?

Decay usually grows over time, so treatment is generally best arranged soon after it is found. Pain, swelling or a broken tooth deserve a prompt call to the office to discuss urgency.
