Treating decay in young teeth

A cavity in a child’s tooth deserves a calm, clear plan.

Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth, help with chewing and speech, and can become painful or infected when decay goes untreated. Cavities in children can progress quickly because the enamel on primary teeth is thinner. Finding and treating them early often keeps the treatment simpler and more comfortable for the child.

Families from Bloomsburg bring their children to our Port Dover office for this care. The dentist explains what was found, which teeth are involved and what treatment would involve, so parents can prepare their child and ask questions before any appointment. Treatment does not have to be booked on the same day.

Finding the cavity

Decay is not always visible or painful at first.

  1. Signs at home

A child may complain when eating sweets or drinking something cold, avoid chewing on one side, or point to a sore tooth. Parents sometimes notice a brown or chalky white spot near the gumline. Some cavities cause no symptoms at all, especially between teeth. Mention anything you have seen, even if your child seems unbothered by it day to day.

  2. Examination and imaging

During the exam, the dentist looks at each tooth and may recommend X-rays to check between them or to see how deep a cavity extends. The findings are explained in plain language. Parents can ask which teeth need attention first and whether any spots are early enough to monitor with prevention rather than fill straight away.

Treatment choices

The approach depends on the tooth, the depth and the child’s age.

Fillings and other restorations

Small to moderate cavities are often repaired with a tooth-coloured filling. Larger decay in a baby molar may need a crown to cover and protect the tooth until it falls out naturally. If decay has reached the nerve, a procedure to treat the inner tissue might be suggested. The dentist will explain why one option suits a particular tooth better than another.

When a baby tooth may be removed

If a baby tooth is badly damaged or infected and close to falling out, removal may be discussed. When it is lost early, a space maintainer might be suggested to stop neighbouring teeth from drifting. Parents are welcome to ask about each option’s purpose, the number of visits involved and how it may affect the adult tooth underneath.

The appointment

Simple preparation helps children know what to expect.

Preparing your child

Use calm, simple words when telling your child about the visit, and avoid phrases that suggest pain or fear. Let the team know if your child has had a difficult dental experience, has sensory sensitivities or responds best to particular explanations. A meal beforehand is usually fine unless the dentist gives other instructions. Bring a comfort item if it helps.

Keeping the visit comfortable

The dentist uses numbing to keep the tooth comfortable and explains each step in child-friendly terms. Your child can be shown how to signal a break. For children who are very anxious, calming approaches or options such as nitrous oxide may be discussed. The goal is a visit that feels manageable and does not leave a lasting worry.

Preventing more

Treatment is a good moment to strengthen prevention at home.

  • Care after the filling

After numbing, watch that your child does not bite their cheek, lip or tongue until feeling returns. Soft foods may be easier for the rest of the day. Mild tenderness can occur and usually settles. Call the office if pain grows, swelling appears or the filling feels high when your child bites together, so the bite can be checked.

  • Lowering the risk of new cavities

Ask about sealants for the chewing surfaces of molars and fluoride treatment, which can help protect teeth. Brushing twice daily with an appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary snacks and drinks between meals, and helping younger children brush are all useful. Regular checkups allow new decay to be caught early when treatment is smaller.

Before you book

Cavities in children

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Why fill a baby tooth that will fall out?

Baby teeth guide adult teeth into place and are needed for chewing and speech, sometimes for years. Untreated decay can cause pain or infection, so the dentist will recommend treatment based on the tooth and the child’s age.

Will my child need freezing?

In most cases a local anaesthetic is used to keep the tooth comfortable. The dentist explains it in gentle terms. Very small or shallow repairs may not need it, and that can be discussed during planning.

What colour will the filling be?

Tooth-coloured fillings are often used. For larger decay in baby molars, a crown may be more suitable. The dentist will explain the choices for each tooth and why one may be preferred. Parents can ask to see the shade.

Can I stay with my child?

Ask when booking. Many parents stay with younger children for reassurance. The team can talk about the arrangement that is most likely to help your child stay calm during treatment. Older children sometimes prefer to go in alone.

How can we prevent another cavity?

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, regular checkups and sealants on molars can all help. The team can tailor advice to your child’s age and the habits at home, including bedtime routines.
