Bruxism is the habit of clenching or grinding the teeth, either during sleep or while awake and concentrating. Many people only learn about it when a partner hears the noise, a dentist notices flattened edges, or they wake with a tight jaw and a dull headache. Over time the forces involved can chip teeth and loosen dental work.
If you live in Silver Hill and suspect you grind, our Port Dover team can look for wear patterns, check the jaw muscles and talk through what may be contributing. The goal is to protect your teeth and reduce strain, with a plan that reflects how and when the grinding seems to happen.

Recognizing the habit
Flattened or chipped biting edges, small cracks, teeth that feel sensitive without obvious decay and fillings that keep breaking can all suggest grinding. Waking with sore jaw muscles, a stiff neck, earache or a headache around the temples is another common pattern. Some people notice ridges along the inside of the cheek or scalloped edges on the tongue.
Clenching while driving, working, lifting or concentrating on a screen is easy to miss. Try checking several times a day whether your teeth are touching; at rest they usually should be slightly apart. Noting when you catch yourself clenching gives the dentist useful information about whether daytime habits, sleep grinding or both are involved.
The assessment
The dentist looks at how your teeth meet, the pattern and depth of wear, and the condition of existing restorations. The jaw joints and chewing muscles are checked for tenderness and range of movement. Photographs or records may be kept so changes can be compared at future visits, which helps show whether the problem is stable or progressing.
Stress, certain medications, caffeine, alcohol and sleep problems can all be associated with grinding. Loud snoring, gasping or daytime tiredness may point to a sleep-breathing issue that deserves medical attention. Mention these openly, because the right recommendation may involve your physician as well as the dental team.
Protecting your teeth
A custom-fitted night guard places a durable layer between upper and lower teeth so the forces land on the appliance instead of the enamel. It is made from impressions or scans of your teeth and adjusted for comfort. A guard does not always stop grinding, but it can protect teeth and dental work from ongoing wear.
Where grinding has already chipped or worn teeth, the dentist may suggest bonding, crowns or other repairs once the habit is better controlled. Fixing teeth without addressing the forces can lead to repeat breakage, so protection usually comes first. Any restorative plan should be explained along with its maintenance needs.
Daily habits
Practise keeping lips together and teeth apart, with the tongue resting gently behind the upper front teeth. Gentle jaw stretches, warm compresses and breaks from long periods of concentration may help. Cutting back on caffeine late in the day and avoiding gum chewing can reduce muscle fatigue for some people.
Clean your night guard each morning, let it dry and store it in its case away from heat and pets. Bring it to checkups so its fit and wear can be inspected. If you notice new jaw clicking, locking, or pain that is worsening, contact the office rather than waiting for the next routine visit.
Planning your appointment
When you contact our Port Dover office, mention grinding, jaw soreness or morning headaches so enough time is set aside to examine your bite and jaw. Note any recent breaks in teeth or fillings.
If someone has heard you grinding at night, ask them how often it happens. Bring any existing guard you have been using.

Not always. For many people the aim is to manage it by protecting the teeth, easing muscle tension and reducing contributing factors. Some find the habit lessens over time, especially when stress or sleep issues improve.
Over-the-counter guards may offer some protection for a short time, but they are not shaped to your bite and can be bulky or loose. A custom guard is designed for fit and durability, and the dentist can adjust it if needed.
It can be. Grinding is sometimes associated with snoring or disrupted breathing during sleep. If you have loud snoring, gasping or heavy daytime fatigue, mention it so the dentist can suggest whether a medical assessment is appropriate.
Grinding can wear enamel and create small cracks that expose the inner layer of the tooth, leading to sensitivity. The dentist can check for wear and suggest ways to protect the teeth and ease discomfort.
Some children do, often during sleep, and many outgrow it. Mention it at your child’s checkup so the dentist can look for wear and decide whether any monitoring or treatment is needed.
A night guard made from your bite can protect teeth from grinding. See how custom guards are made in Port Dover and how Silver Hill patients care for them.
Clicking, aching or a jaw that locks can point to a TMJ disorder. Silver Hill patients can learn how jaw problems are assessed and what gentle care involves.
