Bruxism is the habit of clenching or grinding the teeth, often during sleep but sometimes during concentration or stress. A partner may hear it at night, or you may notice tired jaw muscles, flattened tooth edges, chipped fillings or sensitivity. Some people have no symptoms at all until a dentist points out wear during an examination.
Peacock Point residents, whether at the lake for the season or living there year-round, can arrange a bruxism assessment at our Port Dover office. The appointment focuses on what the wear and symptoms suggest and which steps could protect your teeth and jaw.

Recognizing signs
Waking with a stiff jaw, aching temples or a dull headache can suggest clenching overnight. Some people feel tooth soreness without a cavity or notice clicking when opening wide. During the day, you might catch yourself pressing your teeth together while driving or working. Write down when symptoms appear, because timing helps distinguish daytime habits from sleep-related grinding.
A dentist may notice flattened biting surfaces, small fractures in enamel, notches near the gumline or repeatedly broken restorations. Enlarged jaw muscles or ridges on the inside of the cheeks can also be clues. These findings do not always mean active grinding, so the dentist will combine them with your history before drawing conclusions.
Assessment
Stress, sleep patterns, certain medications, caffeine and alcohol can all influence bruxism. Your bite and existing dental work are also considered. The dentist will ask about your routines and health, examine the jaw joints and muscles and may photograph or record wear so changes can be compared over time at later visits.
Grinding during sleep is sometimes associated with breathing disturbances such as snoring or sleep apnea. If you have loud snoring, daytime sleepiness or pauses in breathing that others notice, mention them. The dentist may suggest discussing these with your physician, since a sleep assessment may be more important than protecting the teeth alone.
Management
A custom night guard made from impressions or scans of your teeth can help protect enamel and restorations from grinding forces. It does not necessarily stop the habit, but it can reduce damage. The dentist will explain the type of guard recommended, how it should fit and how adjustments are handled if it feels uncomfortable.
For daytime clenching, simply noticing the habit and resting the jaw with lips together and teeth apart can help. Gentle jaw stretches, warm compresses and stress management may also be suggested. If damaged teeth need repair, the dentist will usually discuss protecting them first so new restorations are not exposed to the same forces.
Long-term care
Rinse and brush a night guard as instructed, let it dry and store it in its case away from heat and pets. Bring it to dental appointments so the fit and condition can be checked. Cracks, rough spots or a guard that no longer seats comfortably should be reported rather than tolerated, as a poor fit may cause new discomfort.
Regular examinations allow the dentist to compare wear with earlier records and see whether symptoms are improving. Let the team know about new jaw pain, headaches or changes in sleep. If dental work is planned elsewhere during the off-season, share your bruxism history with that dentist so the habit is considered in any treatment.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office and mention jaw soreness, tooth wear or grinding noises reported by others. The team can arrange an examination that focuses on bruxism and protective options.
Bring any night guard you already own and a list of medications, and note when symptoms are most noticeable.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Over time, grinding can wear enamel, fracture teeth and loosen restorations. Lost enamel does not grow back, which is why early assessment and protection are often recommended. The dentist can explain what the current wear suggests for your situation.
Not always. A guard mainly protects teeth and restorations from grinding forces. Some people find symptoms ease while wearing one. Addressing contributing factors such as stress or sleep problems may also be part of the plan.
Over-the-counter guards may not fit closely and can feel bulky. A custom guard is made for your teeth and checked by the dentist. Discuss your situation before relying on any guard to manage significant grinding.
Sometimes. Sleep-related grinding can occur alongside breathing disturbances. If you snore loudly or feel unrested, mention it. The dentist may recommend speaking with your physician about a sleep assessment.
Bring it to your regular dental appointments. The dentist can check fit and wear and recommend adjustment or replacement when needed. Report cracks or discomfort sooner rather than waiting for the next visit.
A guard made from your own impressions can help protect teeth from nighttime grinding. Peacock Point patients can ask about fittings at our Port Dover dental office.
Jaw clicking, pain or trouble opening wide may involve the TMJ. Peacock Point patients can have the jaw joint and muscles assessed at our Port Dover dental office.
