A small chip on a front tooth and a large fracture that exposes the inner tooth are very different problems, even though both can be alarming. Pain, sensitivity to cold, a sharp edge cutting the tongue or bleeding from the tooth all help indicate how quickly you should be seen and what kind of repair may be considered.
Wilsonville patients should phone our Port Dover office as soon as practical after the damage and describe what happened. The team can discuss urgency and availability, and give interim advice for protecting the tooth while you arrange to make the trip in for an assessment.

Right after it happens
Rinse gently with lukewarm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face if there is swelling. If a sharp edge is irritating your tongue or cheek, dental wax or sugar-free gum can cover it temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or hard foods until the tooth has been checked.
If a piece of tooth broke away, place it in a clean container with a little milk or water and bring it along. Sometimes a fragment can be considered for reattachment, although that is not always possible. Do not try to glue a fragment back yourself, as household adhesives can harm the tooth and gums.
Assessment
The examination considers how much enamel and dentin were lost, whether the fracture line continues below the gum and whether neighbouring teeth were affected. An X-ray may be recommended to see the root and surrounding bone. Some fractures look small on the surface but extend further than expected, which changes the repair options.
Sensitivity, lingering pain or a pink or red spot in the break can signal that the nerve is close to the surface or exposed. In those situations, protecting the pulp becomes a priority. Your dentist will explain what the findings mean and whether additional treatment, such as root canal therapy, might need to be discussed.
Repair options
Minor chips may be smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-coloured composite bonding, often in a single visit when the tooth is otherwise healthy. Bonding can restore the shape and appearance of a front tooth, though it may need touch-ups over the years. Your dentist will explain how durable it is likely to be for your bite.
When a larger portion of the tooth has broken, a crown, onlay or other restoration may be recommended to protect what remains. If the tooth cannot be restored predictably, your dentist will discuss alternatives. Ask about the number of visits, any temporary coverage and how each option would hold up under chewing forces.
After repair
Some sensitivity can occur after a repair and usually settles, but pain that worsens, throbbing or swelling should be reported promptly. A tooth that has been injured can sometimes develop nerve problems later, so your dentist may suggest checking it at future visits even if it feels fine now.
Avoid biting directly into very hard items like ice, popcorn kernels or pen caps with the repaired tooth. If the break happened during sport, ask about a properly fitted mouthguard. If you grind or clench at night, mention it, because a night guard may help protect both the repair and your other teeth.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and describe the break, any pain and how it happened. The team will discuss urgency and current availability so you know when to make the trip and what to bring with you.
Bring any tooth fragment stored in milk or water, and let the team know about recent injuries, medications or previous work on that tooth.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
A small, painless chip is usually less urgent, but it should still be checked. Call sooner if there is pain, sensitivity, bleeding from the tooth or a sharp edge injuring your mouth, as these may need prompt attention.
Sometimes, depending on the size and condition of the fragment and the tooth. Keep it moist in milk or water and bring it with you. Your dentist will advise whether reattachment or another repair is more suitable.
Not necessarily. Root canal treatment is considered when the nerve is exposed, infected or unlikely to recover. Your dentist will assess the tooth and explain whether that is needed or whether a simpler repair is appropriate.
Over-the-counter pain relievers may help when used according to the label and your health conditions. Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.
Durability varies with the size of the repair, your bite and habits such as grinding. Bonding may need polishing or replacement over time. Your dentist can explain what to expect for your particular tooth.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or cover marks. Wilsonville patients can learn whether it suits them at our Port Dover office.
A crack may cause sharp pain when biting or sensitivity that comes and goes. Wilsonville patients can have a cracked or broken tooth assessed in Port Dover.
