A small chip on a front edge and a back tooth that has split near the gum are very different problems, even though both start with the same moment of surprise. Pain, sensitivity to cold, a sharp edge against the tongue or a visible pink or dark spot all help a dentist judge how deep the damage goes.
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office to describe what broke and how it feels now. The team will discuss how soon an assessment is advisable, and the dentist will examine the tooth in person at the Port Dover practice before recommending a particular repair.

Right after the break
Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water and look for any piece of tooth or filling. If you find one, keep it clean in a small container and bring it along, although it may not always be reattachable. A cold compress on the outside of the face can ease swelling after a knock. Avoid chewing on that side until the tooth has been checked.
A jagged edge can rub the tongue or cheek. Orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum pressed gently over the edge may help temporarily. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the package can ease discomfort if it is safe for you. Note whether the tooth reacts to hot, cold or biting, since that information helps the dentist.
When to call quickly
Call promptly if the break exposes a pink or red spot in the centre of the tooth, if pain is strong or throbbing, if the tooth feels loose or out of place, or if swelling develops. These signs may mean the nerve is involved or the tooth was injured more than it looks. Describing them clearly helps the team decide how soon you should be assessed.
A tiny chip with no pain or sensitivity is usually less urgent, though it still deserves a dental check. Even painless chips can hide a crack running further into the tooth. Keep the area clean, avoid hard foods and book an appointment rather than waiting months, because a small break can grow when the tooth is under constant chewing pressure.
Choosing a repair
After examining the tooth and, often, taking an X-ray, the dentist explains what was found. Minor chips may only need smoothing, while many small to moderate breaks can be rebuilt with tooth-coloured bonding. The aim is to restore shape and protect the tooth so it is comfortable to use, with an appearance that blends in reasonably well.
When a large part of the tooth is missing, a crown or onlay may provide better strength. If the nerve has been affected, root canal treatment may be recommended first. Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and removal is discussed along with replacement options. Ask about the benefits, limits and upkeep of each suggestion before deciding.
Looking after it
Follow any instructions about eating after the appointment, particularly if anaesthetic was used or a temporary restoration was placed. Mild sensitivity can occur for a short while after bonding or other work. Let the office know if the bite feels high, pain increases or the repair feels rough, as an adjustment is often straightforward.
If grinding, chewing ice or opening packages with your teeth contributed to the break, consider changing those habits. Ask whether a night guard or sports guard would help protect your teeth. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor repaired teeth and catch wear or new cracks before they lead to another emergency trip from Walsingham.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office before you set out and explain how the tooth broke, what you can see and how much it hurts. The team will talk through urgency and what appointment may be available.
Bring the fragment if you found it, a list of your medications and any notes about what you have taken for pain since the injury.

Occasionally a clean fragment can be bonded back, but this depends on the size, fit and condition of the piece and tooth. Keep it moist and clean and bring it in. The dentist will explain whether reattachment or another repair is more reliable.
It should still be examined. A small chip can have a crack beneath it or leave an edge that wears or breaks further. Early repair is often simpler, and the dentist can tell you whether smoothing or bonding is enough.
Not always. Crowns are usually considered when a large part of the tooth is lost or weakened, especially on back teeth. Smaller breaks are often repaired with bonding. The recommendation follows the exam and X-rays.
The break may have exposed the inner layer of the tooth, which carries sensations toward the nerve. Sensitivity can also suggest deeper involvement. Avoid very cold or hot foods and mention this symptom when you call.
Breaks at or below the gum can be harder to restore and need prompt assessment. The dentist will check how much tooth structure remains and discuss whether it can be rebuilt or whether removal and replacement should be considered.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to fix chips, small gaps and worn edges. Walsingham patients can see what it can do, how long it may last and how it is cared for.
Sharp pain when you bite and release could be a cracked tooth. Walsingham patients can learn how cracks are found and why early treatment can protect the tooth.
