Protect what is left of the tooth

A damaged tooth is easier to repair when it is assessed promptly.

A tooth can chip on a hard snack, during a fall on a slippery dock or from years of wear that finally gives way. Some breaks are small and painless, while others expose sensitive inner layers. The size of the damage and whether the nerve is affected both shape what repair is possible.

From Turkey Point, call our Port Dover office as soon as you can after the break. Describe what happened, whether you have pain or sensitivity and whether you found the broken piece, so the team can advise on timing and what to bring.

Right after the break

A few simple steps help keep the tooth stable until it is seen.

  1. Rinse, check and save any fragment

Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water and look at the tooth in a mirror if you can. If a piece broke off, keep it in a clean container with a little milk or water; it may or may not be usable, but the dentist can decide. Note whether any part of the tooth now looks pink or dark.

  2. Ease discomfort and protect sharp edges

A cold compress on the cheek can help with swelling. If a jagged edge is cutting your tongue or lip, dental wax or sugar-free gum may cover it temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot or cold drinks. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if suitable for you; follow the label.

Assessing the damage

What looks minor on the surface can extend further than expected.

Enamel chips versus deeper fractures

A small chip confined to the outer enamel is often straightforward to smooth or restore. Breaks that reach the dentin beneath tend to be sensitive and need covering. When the fracture approaches or exposes the pulp, the tooth may need more involved care. The dentist will examine the tooth closely and test how it responds.

Why an X-ray may be needed

An X-ray can show whether a crack extends below the gum line or into the root, and whether the surrounding bone looks healthy. This information is important for deciding whether a simple repair will last or whether the tooth needs a different approach. Your dentist will explain what the images show and how that affects the choices.

Repair options

The best repair depends on how much tooth remains and where it broke.

Bonding and fillings for smaller damage

Tooth-coloured bonding or a composite filling can rebuild a chipped edge or replace a small missing section, often matching the surrounding enamel closely. These repairs suit many front-tooth chips and minor back-tooth fractures. The dentist will discuss how well the material is likely to hold up given your bite and the location of the damage.

Crowns or nerve treatment for larger breaks

When a large part of the tooth is lost, a crown may be recommended to cover and strengthen what remains. If the nerve is exposed or injured, root canal treatment might be needed first. In some cases a tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist will talk through replacement options. Ask about each step and why it is suggested.

After the repair

Good habits help the repair and the rest of your teeth last.

  • Caring for the restored tooth

Follow any instructions about eating after the appointment, especially if numbing was used. Some sensitivity can occur for a short time after a repair. If pain increases, the bite feels high or the restoration feels rough or loose, contact the office so it can be checked rather than waiting for a routine visit.

  • Lowering the risk of another break

Avoid using your teeth to open packaging or crack shells, and be cautious with very hard foods. If you play sports or are active on the water, ask whether a mouthguard makes sense. People who grind or clench may benefit from a night guard. Regular checkups allow early signs of wear or cracks to be spotted.

Planning your appointment

Getting seen from Turkey Point

Phone our Port Dover office to explain how the tooth broke and how it feels now. The team will discuss how soon you should be seen and what to bring with you.

Bring the broken fragment if you saved it, along with your medication list. If you are a seasonal visitor, mention your home dentist in case records help.

Broken and chipped tooth questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is a small chip without pain still worth checking?

Yes. Even a painless chip can leave a sharp edge or weaken the tooth, and some small chips hide deeper cracks. An exam helps decide whether smoothing, bonding or simple monitoring is the most suitable option.

Can the broken piece be reattached?

Sometimes a clean fragment can be bonded back, but it depends on the break and the condition of the piece. Keep it moist in milk or water and bring it along. The dentist will tell you whether reattachment is a reasonable option.

What if the tooth turns dark after the injury?

Colour change can indicate that the nerve has been affected. Contact the office and mention the change. The dentist may test the tooth and take an X-ray to see whether further treatment is needed.

Should I go to a hospital instead of a dentist?

Go to emergency or call 911 for a serious head injury, uncontrolled bleeding or breathing or swallowing difficulty. For a broken tooth without those warning signs, contact the dental office for advice on timing.

How long will a bonded repair last?

That varies with the size of the repair, your bite and habits such as grinding. Bonding can last well with care but may need touch-ups over time. Your dentist can explain what to expect for your particular tooth.
