Chips, breaks and sharp edges

How much of the tooth is affected shapes the repair.

A small chip off a front tooth can feel alarming but may be simple to smooth or bond. A larger break, especially one that exposes the inner layers or causes pain, can need more involved care. Either way, an examination helps confirm what has been damaged and whether the nerve or surrounding teeth were affected.

Townsend patients can call our Port Dover office to describe what happened and arrange an assessment. Telling the team whether the tooth hurts, is sensitive or has a sharp edge helps them understand how soon you should be seen and what to do in the meantime.

Right after the break

A few simple actions help before your appointment.

  1. Save any fragments and rinse gently

Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water and look for any pieces of tooth. If you find a fragment, keep it in a clean container with a little milk or water and bring it along, as it can occasionally be useful. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face if the lip or cheek is swollen or bruised.

  2. Protect the tooth and soft tissue

A jagged edge can cut the tongue or cheek, so a small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover it temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or hard foods. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is suitable for you and taken as the label directs.

Describe the damage

Clear details help the team judge urgency.

  • Explain the size and location of the break

Say which tooth is involved, roughly how much broke away and whether the break happened from biting something hard, a fall or a sports injury. Mention whether a filling or crown was on the tooth already. Knowing the cause helps the dentist anticipate whether other teeth or the jaw may need checking during the visit.

  • Mention pain, sensitivity or colour change

Lingering pain, sharp sensitivity to air or temperature, bleeding from the tooth itself or a pink or dark spot in the broken area can suggest the inner layers are exposed. These details matter, because they may mean the tooth should be seen sooner. If nothing hurts, an assessment is still worthwhile to prevent further cracking.

Repair options

The repair is matched to what remains of the tooth.

Small chips and minor fractures

Minor chips may only need polishing to remove a rough edge, or a tooth-coloured bonding material shaped to restore the outline. These approaches usually preserve as much natural tooth as possible. The dentist will check your bite to make sure the repaired area is not taking excessive force when you chew or close your teeth together.

Larger breaks and nerve involvement

When a large portion is missing, a crown or onlay may be recommended to protect what remains. If the break reaches the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed before the tooth is restored. In some cases a tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist will explain replacement options and their trade-offs before you decide.

After the repair

Follow-up care protects the repaired tooth.

Watch for changes in the following weeks

A tooth that has been injured can sometimes change over time, even after a successful repair. Contact the office if you notice increasing sensitivity, pain when biting, swelling nearby or darkening of the tooth. These signs do not always mean something is wrong, but they are worth checking rather than waiting until the next routine visit.

Reduce the chance of another break

Avoid biting directly on ice, hard candy, pen caps or other hard objects, and do not use your teeth to open packages. If the break happened during sport, ask about a properly fitted mouthguard. Grinding or clenching at night can also stress repaired teeth, so mention it if a partner has noticed the habit.

Planning your appointment

Calling ahead from Townsend.

Phone our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and explain how the tooth broke, how it feels now and whether you found any fragments. The team can advise you on care until your appointment.

Bring the fragment if you saved it, along with a current list of medications and any health conditions the dentist should know about.

Questions after a chipped or broken tooth

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is a small chip worth having checked?

Yes, usually. Even a small chip can leave a sharp edge or a weak point that cracks further later. An exam confirms whether the damage is only cosmetic or whether the deeper parts of the tooth need protection.

Can a broken piece be reattached?

Occasionally a clean fragment can be bonded back, depending on its size and condition. Store it in milk or water and bring it to the appointment. The dentist will decide whether reattachment or another repair is more suitable.

What if the broken tooth does not hurt?

Lack of pain does not always mean the tooth is fine. A break can still weaken the tooth or expose areas to decay. Arrange an assessment so the dentist can recommend whether and how it should be repaired.

Will I need a crown for a broken tooth?

Not always. Small breaks are often repaired with bonding, while larger breaks may need a crown or onlay to protect the remaining structure. The decision depends on how much healthy tooth is left and how you bite.

When is a broken tooth an emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, bleeding from the tooth or a break after a facial injury calls for prompt contact with the office. Head injury, uncontrolled bleeding or breathing difficulty needs emergency medical care first.
