Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for RentonA chip, a crack or a missing corner
A small chip on a front tooth and a large piece missing from a back molar are very different problems. Some breaks are mostly cosmetic, while others expose the inner layers of the tooth and cause sensitivity or pain. Calling promptly and describing what you see helps the team judge how soon you should be seen.
Renton patients are cared for at our Port Dover office. Before you leave home, phone 519-583-2929, explain how the tooth broke and whether it hurts, and ask what to bring. If you can find the broken piece, keep it clean and moist and bring it along.

Right after the break
Rinse gently with warm water and apply light pressure with clean gauze if the gum is bleeding. A cold compress on the cheek can help with swelling. If there is a sharp edge, sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover it temporarily. Store any fragment in milk or water rather than letting it dry out.
Pain when breathing in cold air, sensitivity to hot or cold, a pink or red spot in the break, or a tooth that feels loose all suggest the damage may be deeper. Mention these signs when you call. A painless small chip may still be booked soon, but it is often less pressing than a break with symptoms.
Examining the damage
At the appointment the dentist will look at the fracture, test how the tooth responds and check how your bite meets the damaged area. Neighbouring teeth and any existing fillings or crowns are examined too, since a fall or hard bite can affect more than one tooth. You will be asked about how the injury happened.
X-rays may be recommended to see whether the crack reaches the root or the nerve. That information shapes the options. A tooth that looks only slightly chipped can sometimes hide a deeper fracture, while a dramatic-looking break may be easier to restore than expected. The dentist will explain what the images show and what they cannot rule out.
Repair options
Small chips are often repaired with tooth-coloured bonding or a filling, shaped to restore the edge and blended to match nearby teeth. In some cases the original fragment can be bonded back. The dentist can explain how long such repairs typically last and what habits may put them at risk. Bonded edges can usually be touched up later if they chip.
When a large part of the tooth is lost, a crown or onlay may be suggested to protect what remains. If the nerve is exposed or inflamed, root canal treatment might be needed first. Occasionally a tooth cannot be saved. You will have the chance to ask about each option before agreeing to a plan.
After the repair
Follow the instructions you are given about eating after the appointment, especially if numbing was used. Avoid biting directly into very hard foods with the repaired tooth, and be cautious with ice, nutshells and similar items. If you play contact sports or work in a job with a risk of facial knocks, ask about a protective guard.
Some sensitivity can occur after a repair. If it grows worse, if the tooth darkens, if the gum near it swells or if the bite feels high, call the office. Injured teeth occasionally develop problems weeks later, so keep any follow-up visit the dentist recommends even if the tooth feels fine. Early checks often catch changes while they are simpler to manage.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and describe the break, any pain and how it happened. The team will discuss urgency and the next suitable appointment based on availability.
Bring the broken piece if you have it, stored in milk or water, along with a list of medications and any allergies.

A small, painless chip is usually not an emergency, but it should still be examined. Call if there is pain, sensitivity, bleeding or a sharp edge cutting your tongue or cheek, as those can make a sooner visit more appropriate.
Sometimes. It depends on the size and condition of the fragment and the remaining tooth. Keep it moist in milk or water and bring it to the appointment so the dentist can assess whether reattachment is a reasonable option.
A cold compress and an over-the-counter pain reliever you can safely take may help. Follow the package directions and any advice from your pharmacist or doctor. Avoid chewing on the injured side until it is examined.
Not always. Smaller breaks can often be bonded or filled. A crown may be suggested when a large portion of the tooth is missing or weakened. The dentist will explain the reasons after examining the tooth and any X-rays.
Yes. A weakened tooth can crack further, and exposed inner layers may become sensitive or infected. Getting the tooth assessed lets the dentist recommend protection before a minor problem becomes a larger one. Avoid chewing on it meanwhile.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to fix chips, small gaps and uneven edges. Renton patients can find out if it suits their smile at our Port Dover office.
A sharp twinge when biting or releasing can signal a cracked tooth. Renton residents can have cracks diagnosed and repairs planned at our Port Dover office.
