Caring for La Salette patients at our Port Dover office

A chipped edge from biting something hard is a very different problem from a tooth split by a fall. Pain, sensitivity to cold, a sharp edge cutting the tongue or a visible pink or dark spot inside the break all help indicate how deep the damage goes and how soon it should be seen.
From La Salette, call our Port Dover office and describe what happened before you set out. The team can ask about symptoms, discuss how urgent the break appears and explain what to bring, including any fragment you were able to find.

Right after it breaks
Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water and look for the broken piece. If you find it, keep it clean and moist in a small container rather than wrapping it in tissue. A fragment is not always reusable, but bringing it lets the dentist decide. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can ease swelling after an impact.
Avoid chewing on the damaged side and steer clear of very hot, cold or hard foods. If a sharp edge is irritating your tongue or cheek, sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover it temporarily. Over-the-counter pain relief, used as directed on the package, may help while you wait for your appointment.
Assessing the damage
A chip confined to enamel is often mainly a cosmetic and comfort issue. When the break reaches the softer dentin underneath, sensitivity is common and the tooth needs covering. If the nerve is exposed or the tooth was badly jarred, the dentist will check its health carefully, and X-rays are often part of that assessment.
Not every crack is visible. The dentist may test how the tooth responds to biting and temperature and look at neighbouring teeth that took part of the impact. Your bite is also checked, since a fractured cusp can change how teeth meet. These findings guide which repair will hold up over time.
Repair options
Minor chips on front or back teeth can frequently be restored with tooth-coloured bonding, shaped and polished to match the surrounding enamel. In some cases simply smoothing a rough edge is enough. The dentist can explain how durable each option is likely to be, given your bite and the position of the tooth.
When a large portion of the tooth is missing, an onlay or crown may be suggested to protect what remains. If the nerve has been affected, root canal treatment might be needed before the final restoration. Occasionally a tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist will then discuss removal and replacement options with you.
After the repair
Some teeth that seem settled after an injury can develop problems weeks or months later. Report lingering pain, darkening of the tooth, swelling of the gum or a pimple-like bump near the root. The dentist may suggest a review appointment to check the tooth’s health after trauma, even if the repair looks good.
If the break happened during sport, ask about a custom mouthguard. If it came from chewing ice, hard candy or a habit like biting pens, adjusting that habit helps protect the repair. Night grinding can also stress repaired teeth, so mention jaw tension or worn teeth at your next visit.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office first and describe the break, any pain and how it happened. The team can discuss urgency and current availability before you make the drive.
Bring the fragment in a clean container with a little milk or water, and a list of any medicines you take.

A small painless chip is usually not urgent, but it should still be examined soon to rule out a deeper crack. Pain, swelling, an exposed nerve or a break after an injury should be reported promptly so the team can advise on timing.
Sometimes a clean fragment can be reattached, but often a new bonded or crowned restoration works better. Bring the piece anyway, kept moist, so the dentist can decide what suits the tooth.
The break may have exposed dentin, which carries sensation toward the nerve. Covering it usually reduces sensitivity. Persistent or worsening pain may suggest deeper involvement and should be checked.
Only if the nerve is damaged or becomes inflamed. Many chipped teeth are repaired without it. The dentist will assess the nerve and explain whether monitoring or treatment is recommended.
Call promptly, since a loosened or displaced tooth needs timely professional assessment. Avoid chewing on it and seek emergency medical care first if there was a serious head injury or uncontrolled bleeding.
Bonding can close small gaps, cover chips and reshape edges with tooth-coloured resin. La Salette patients can see what to expect and how bonding is maintained.
A crack can cause sharp pain on biting or lingering cold sensitivity. La Salette patients can learn how cracks are found and which repairs might fit.
