Every dental service for Jarvis patientsDamaged tooth, clear next steps
Biting something hard, a fall or an old filling giving way can leave a tooth with a rough edge, a missing corner or a large piece gone. Some chips are cosmetic, while others expose the inner layers and cause sensitivity or pain. It is difficult to judge which from a mirror alone, so an assessment is worthwhile.
From Jarvis, call our Port Dover office and describe what happened, how much of the tooth is affected and whether there is pain or bleeding. The team can discuss how soon you should be seen.

Right after it happens
If you can find the broken fragment, keep it in a clean container with a little milk or water and bring it along. Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water. If there is bleeding from the gum or lip, apply light pressure with clean gauze. A cold compress on the outside of the face can help with swelling.
Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or sticky foods. A sharp edge can be covered temporarily with sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax to protect your tongue and cheek. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you; follow the package directions and your health advice.
Assess the damage
A chip confined to enamel is very different from a fracture that reaches the dentin or extends below the gumline. The dentist will examine the tooth, check your bite and may take X-rays to look at the root and surrounding bone. This information determines which repair options are realistic and how urgent treatment is.
Pain with hot or cold, a pink spot in the break or a tooth that aches on its own can suggest the nerve is involved. The gum, lips and neighbouring teeth will be checked too, particularly after an injury. Describe all your symptoms, even ones that seem unrelated, so nothing is overlooked.
Repair choices
A small chip may be smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-coloured bonding material, often matching the surrounding enamel closely. In some cases the saved fragment can be reattached, depending on its condition. The dentist will explain which approach suits the tooth, how durable it is expected to be and what it requires to maintain.
When a large portion is missing, a crown or onlay may be recommended to protect what remains. If the nerve has been damaged, root canal treatment may be needed before the tooth is restored. When a tooth cannot be saved, the dentist can discuss removal and options for replacing it.
Protect the repair
Follow any instructions about eating after treatment and keep the area clean with gentle brushing and flossing. Some sensitivity after a repair can be normal for a short time. If pain increases, the bite feels high or the restoration feels loose, contact the office rather than waiting for your next routine visit.
Avoid using your teeth to open packages and be cautious with very hard foods such as ice or popcorn kernels. If you grind your teeth or play contact sports, ask whether a night guard or sports guard would help. Regular checkups allow the repair and surrounding teeth to be monitored.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as you can after the tooth breaks. Describe the damage, any pain and how it happened so the team can discuss urgency and appointment availability.
Bring the fragment if you found it, plus a list of medicines and any recent dental records you have.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Even a minor chip can leave a sharp edge or a weak spot that may crack further. An assessment helps confirm whether simple smoothing or bonding is enough, or whether the damage is deeper than it appears.
Sometimes. It depends on the size and condition of the fragment and the break itself. Keep the piece moist in milk or water and bring it. The dentist will explain whether reattachment is a reasonable option.
The break may have exposed dentin, which is more sensitive than enamel, or the nerve may be affected. Avoid temperature extremes until you are seen and tell the dentist exactly what triggers the discomfort.
Not always. Smaller breaks are often repaired with bonding. A crown may be suggested when a large part of the tooth is missing or the remaining structure is weak. The dentist will explain the reasoning after examining it.
Go to emergency care if the tooth broke during an accident with a head injury, if bleeding will not stop, or if you have any trouble breathing or swallowing. Dental repair can follow once you are medically safe.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Jarvis residents can find out at our Port Dover office whether it suits their smile.
Sharp pain when biting or a tooth that feels split? Jarvis patients can have a cracked or broken tooth examined at our Port Dover office and discuss repair options.
