A chip can be as small as a rough edge on a front tooth or as large as a missing corner that exposes the inner layers. Some breaks cause no pain at all, while others make the tooth sensitive to air, cold or biting. How a break is repaired depends on how deep it goes and whether the nerve is affected.
If you chip a tooth at home in Glen Meyer, at work or out in the field, phone our Port Dover office and describe what happened. The team can help you judge how soon the tooth should be seen and what you can do to protect it until your appointment.

Right after the break
Rinse gently with warm water and look at the tooth in a mirror with good light. If a piece came off, keep it in a clean container, as it may occasionally be useful to the dentist. Apply light pressure with clean gauze if the gum is bleeding, and hold a cold compress against the outside of the face to help limit swelling.
Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or hard foods for now. A sharp edge can be covered temporarily with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect the tongue and cheek. These are short-term measures only. They make the wait more comfortable, but they do not replace a proper examination of the damaged tooth.
Assessing the damage
A small chip limited to the enamel may need little more than smoothing or a minor repair. When the break reaches the dentin beneath, the tooth is often more sensitive and needs to be sealed. The dentist examines the tooth, checks how your teeth come together and may take X-rays to see whether any damage extends below the gum line or into the root.
Throbbing pain, lingering sensitivity or a pink or red spot in the broken area can mean the inner pulp is exposed or irritated. These findings change the treatment plan considerably. Describe your symptoms honestly, including whether pain wakes you at night or lingers after a hot drink, so the assessment reflects what the tooth is actually experiencing rather than a guess.
Repair choices
Tooth-coloured bonding or a filling can often restore a small to moderate chip, particularly on front teeth where appearance matters. These repairs can be shaped and polished to blend with the natural tooth. The dentist can explain how durable the repair is expected to be and whether habits such as nail biting or grinding might affect how long it lasts.
When a large portion of the tooth is missing, a crown or onlay may be recommended to protect what remains from splitting. If the nerve is involved, root canal treatment may be discussed before the final restoration. In some cases the tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist will explain the reasons along with the options for replacing it.
After the repair
Mild sensitivity after a repair is common and usually settles over time. Increasing pain, swelling or a gradual darkening of the tooth should be reported, since an injured nerve sometimes shows problems weeks or months later. A follow-up check may be suggested, particularly when the break happened during a significant blow to the mouth rather than while chewing.
If the tooth chipped while biting something hard, grinding at night or playing a sport, think about whether that risk can be reduced going forward. Ask whether a night guard or sports guard would be appropriate. Avoid using your teeth as tools for opening packages, cutting tape or holding nails, which places unnecessary strain on the edges.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as you can after the break. Describe the size of the chip, any pain you are feeling and how it happened, so the team can discuss timing and current availability.
Bring the broken fragment if you saved it, and mention any recent dental work on that tooth as well as medications you take regularly.

Even a minor chip can leave a sharp edge or a weak spot that may grow over time. An exam shows whether smoothing, a small repair or simply monitoring is appropriate. Some tiny chips need very little treatment, but it is still worth having the tooth checked.
Occasionally a fragment can be bonded back into place, depending on its size, condition and how cleanly it broke. Keep it clean and bring it to your appointment. The dentist will decide whether it is usable or whether a different repair would work better.
The break may have exposed the dentin, which carries sensations toward the nerve. Sensitivity can also mean the nerve itself is irritated. Avoid temperature extremes for now and arrange an assessment so the cause can be identified and the tooth sealed or treated.
Not always. Smaller chips are often repaired with bonding or a filling. A crown is usually considered when a large part of the tooth is missing, when a crack runs deep or when the remaining structure needs protection from everyday chewing forces.
Protect the tooth, avoid chewing on it and use over-the-counter pain relief only as directed on the label. Call back if pain or swelling increases. Seek emergency medical care for breathing difficulty, a serious head injury or bleeding that will not stop.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Glen Meyer patients can learn its strengths, limits and day-to-day upkeep.
A sharp twinge when you bite or release can signal a cracked tooth. Glen Meyer patients can learn how cracks are found, treated and protected from spreading.
