Caring for Cultus patients at our office in Port Dover

A small chip from biting something hard and a large break after a fall are very different situations. Some need prompt attention because of pain or exposed inner layers, while others can wait a short time for a planned repair. Understanding the difference helps you decide how quickly to call.
From Cultus, the first step is usually a phone call to our Port Dover office to describe what happened and how the tooth feels. The team can discuss how soon you should be seen and what to do in the meantime to protect the tooth and keep comfortable.

Right after the break
Rinse gently with warm water and look for any pieces of tooth. If you find a fragment, keep it in a clean container with a little milk or water and bring it along. Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax if it is cutting your tongue or cheek. Note the time of the injury so you can tell the team.
A cold compress on the outside of the face may ease swelling. Over-the-counter pain relief can be used according to the package directions if it is safe for you. Avoid chewing on the damaged side and stay away from very hot, cold or sugary foods that may trigger sensitivity. Soft, lukewarm meals are easiest until the tooth has been checked.
Assessing the damage
The examination looks at whether the break involves only the enamel or reaches the inner dentin or pulp. Sensitivity, bleeding from the tooth or a pink spot can suggest a deeper injury. An X-ray may be recommended to check the root and surrounding bone, particularly after a fall or a blow to the face. Neighbouring teeth are usually checked as well.
A visible chip can sometimes hide a crack running further into the tooth. Tell the dentist if biting causes a sharp twinge or if the tooth feels loose. These signs influence whether a simple repair is enough or whether a more protective restoration should be considered for the long-term health of the tooth. Cracks tend to spread if they are left alone.
Choosing a repair
Small chips on front or back teeth are often repaired with tooth-coloured composite bonding, which is shaped and polished to blend with the natural tooth. In some cases a reattached fragment may be possible. Ask the dentist how durable the repair is likely to be and what might cause it to need attention later. Bonding can often be touched up rather than replaced.
When a larger portion of the tooth is missing, an onlay or crown may protect what remains. If the pulp has been affected, root canal treatment might be needed before the final restoration. The dentist can explain the reasoning behind each option, the number of visits involved and what happens if treatment is delayed. A temporary cover may protect the tooth in the meantime.
After the repair
Some sensitivity after treatment is common and often settles over time. Follow any instructions about when to eat and which foods to avoid at first. If the bite feels high, the pain increases or the repair feels rough, contact the office so the dentist can check and adjust it if necessary. Small bite corrections are usually quick.
Avoid using your teeth to open packages or crack hard foods. If you play sports, ask about a mouthguard. If the break happened because of grinding, the dentist may discuss a night guard. Regular checkups allow the repair to be monitored so small problems are noticed before they become bigger ones. Mention any new twinges at those visits.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as you can after the injury. Describe the break, any pain and whether other teeth or your lips were hurt so the team can advise on timing.
Bring any tooth fragments you found, a list of medications and details of how the injury happened, including whether you hit your head.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
A small chip without pain is usually not urgent, but it should still be checked. Call sooner if there is pain, bleeding from the tooth, a large missing piece or sensitivity that is getting worse, as these may indicate deeper damage.
Yes, if you can find it. Store it in a clean container with milk or water and bring it with you. In some situations the dentist may be able to reattach it, although this is not always possible.
Composite bonding is often suitable for small to moderate chips on front teeth. For larger breaks, a crown or veneer may be considered. The dentist will explain which options fit the amount of tooth remaining and your bite.
When enamel breaks away, the softer dentin underneath can be exposed to temperature and sweet foods. Sensitivity may also suggest the damage is close to the nerve, so let the dentist know how strong it is and how long it lasts.
A serious head injury, confusion, vomiting or loss of consciousness needs emergency medical care first. Once you have been assessed medically, contact the dental office about the tooth. Do not delay medical care for dental treatment.
Dental bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and reshape edges. Cultus patients can learn what to expect and how long it lasts.
A cracked tooth may hurt only when you bite or release. Cultus patients can learn how cracks are found, which repairs are considered and why timing matters.
