A chip may feel much larger to your tongue than it looks, while a substantial break may not hurt immediately. Neither appearance nor pain alone establishes the extent of damage. The tooth needs assessment before deciding whether a small repair, protective restoration or another approach is suitable.
Courtland residents can call our Port Dover team with details of the break and any associated injury. Confirm the appointment available before travelling. If the tooth has moved, come out completely or is accompanied by serious symptoms, explain that directly because the urgency and advice can differ.

Explain how the damage occurred
Give the approximate time of the break and describe whether it happened during eating or an impact. Include existing fillings or crowns, sensitivity, bleeding and any change in how the teeth meet. The dentist needs that history to assess the tooth around the visible defect and understand the symptoms that followed.
After an accident, describe other injuries and whether any fragment cannot be found. Serious head injury, breathing problems or uncontrolled bleeding needs immediate medical help. Do not let the wish to repair a tooth distract from the person's overall condition.
Protect the area while arranging assessment
Contact the provider for advice and avoid hard chewing on the damaged tooth. Keep a recovered fragment safely and get instructions for bringing it to the appointment. Filing the edge, applying household glue or putting chemicals against the surface can create further problems before the tooth has been assessed.
Tell the team if a sharp edge is injuring the tongue or cheek so suitable temporary advice can be given. A temporary measure does not establish that the tooth needs no further care. Keep the assessment even if the roughness or discomfort becomes less noticeable.
Review the remaining tooth and repair choices
The examination considers the remaining structure, earlier restorations and nearby tissues, with testing or imaging where indicated. A limited defect may suit a tooth-coloured repair. More extensive damage or deeper concerns can change the recommendation, so the visible size of the chip does not determine the treatment on its own.
If the assessment leaves uncertainty about a crack or internal injury, ask how it will be followed. A cosmetic-looking repair does not answer every question about the tooth's condition. Understand the expected benefit and limitations before proceeding with the recommended option.
Follow the repair with appropriate review
Get instructions for cleaning, chewing and any temporary restoration before leaving. A changed bite, persistent discomfort or another break deserves a call rather than repeated bite testing at home. Review can establish whether the contact needs adjustment or whether the tooth requires further investigation or treatment.
Courtland patients should keep the review schedule, particularly when trauma was involved. Changes may become apparent after the first appointment. If care begins with another provider, arrange sharing of the injury history and treatment so later decisions have the relevant context.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover practice with the timing, symptoms and whether the tooth has existing dental work. Confirm the assessment offered and seek another available provider if a time-sensitive injury cannot be seen promptly here.
Bring recovered material if advised and share details of any earlier care. Ask what the examination establishes, which repair is suitable and whether the injury needs monitoring beyond the visible restoration.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Comfort does not establish the depth of damage or condition of the remaining tooth. Contact the provider and describe what happened. The dentist can assess whether a limited repair is appropriate or another concern needs attention.
Tell the team if you have recovered it and ask how to bring it safely. The clinician can assess whether it is relevant to repair or understanding the damage. Do not delay urgent care while searching for a fragment after a significant injury.
Do not file or reshape the tooth at home. Contact the practice about the sharpness and any tissue injury so appropriate advice can be given. The tooth needs assessment before removing structure or deciding which repair would be suitable.
It may be suitable for selected defects, but the remaining structure and deeper tissues must be considered. Ask why the recommended restoration fits the findings. A small visible chip does not guarantee that the tooth has only a superficial problem.
The dentist may need to monitor symptoms and tissues after trauma or uncertain findings. A restored outline does not prove that every injury consequence has resolved. Keep the recommended review and report changes in pain, colour, movement or bite.
After a dental injury is splinted, confirm eating, cleaning and removal arrangements before returning to Courtland. Stabilization still needs supervised follow-up.
When discussing a cracked tooth from Courtland, ask what coverage can achieve and what uncertainty remains: the tooth may need further care if damage progresses.
