Caring for Boston, Ontario patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for Boston patientsFrom the moment it breaks
A tooth can chip on a hard bite, a fall or an old filling that finally gives way. Some chips are small and only rough to the tongue, while others expose sensitive layers or reach the nerve. The size of the missing piece does not always tell you how serious the damage is underneath.
If you are in Boston or nearby, call our Port Dover office and describe what broke, whether it hurts and whether you can see pink or red inside the tooth. The team can advise how soon you should be seen and what to do while you arrange the trip.

Right after the break
Rinse gently with lukewarm water and check for sharp edges that might cut your tongue or cheek. A small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax from a pharmacy can cover a jagged edge temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side, and choose soft foods that are not very hot or cold until the tooth has been examined and the damage is understood.
If you find the broken piece, keep it clean and moist, for example in a small container with a little milk or water, and bring it with you to the appointment. It cannot always be reattached, but the dentist will want to see it. Do not try to glue it back yourself with household adhesive, which can damage the tooth and gum.
Judging urgency
Strong or throbbing pain, a visible pink or red spot in the centre of the break, a tooth that has moved or feels loose, or swelling in the gum all suggest the damage may be deeper. Call the office promptly and describe these signs clearly, so the team can advise on how quickly an assessment is needed and what to do in the meantime.
A tiny chip with no pain and no sensitivity is often less pressing, though it should still be checked. Sharp edges can irritate the tongue and cheek, and a small crack can grow over time with chewing. Book a visit rather than ignoring it, and let the team know if anything changes, such as new pain or sensitivity, while you wait for the appointment.
Repair choices
Minor chips may be smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-coloured bonding material that is shaped and polished to blend in with the rest of the tooth. This is often a conservative approach that keeps as much natural structure as possible. The dentist will check the bite to make sure the repaired edge does not take too much force during chewing.
When a large portion is missing or the nerve has been affected, a crown, onlay or root canal treatment may be discussed. In some cases the tooth cannot be saved and replacement options are considered instead. Ask the dentist to explain what the examination and x-rays show and why one approach suits your tooth better than the alternatives.
Afterward
Some sensitivity after a repair can settle on its own, but increasing pain, swelling or a change in the tooth’s colour should be reported. If a bonded edge feels rough or the bite seems high, call the office so it can be checked. Small adjustments are easier to make early than after problems such as soreness or a fresh chip have developed.
If the break happened during sport, ask about a properly fitted mouthguard. If you grind or clench, a night guard might be suggested. Avoid using your teeth to open packages, cut tape or crack hard shells. These habits put repeated stress on teeth and restorations, whether natural or repaired, and are a common cause of a second break.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as you can and explain what happened, where the tooth is and whether there is pain or bleeding from it. The team will advise on next steps and appointment timing.
Bring any piece you saved, kept moist in a small sealed container, and avoid chewing on the broken side until the tooth is examined.

It depends on the damage. Severe pain, a visible pink spot, swelling or a loose tooth need prompt attention. A small painless chip is usually less urgent but should still be examined, so that sharp edges or hidden cracks are not missed.
Sometimes a fragment can be bonded back, but not always. Keep it moist and bring it to your appointment. The dentist will decide whether reattachment is suitable or whether another type of repair would work better for that particular tooth.
Stick to soft foods at moderate temperatures and chew on the other side. Avoid very hard, sticky or crunchy items that could break the tooth further or catch on a sharp edge. Lukewarm soups, yogurt and soft pasta are sensible choices.
Not necessarily. Small chips are often repaired with bonding. Larger breaks, or teeth that already have big fillings, may need more coverage to stay strong. The dentist will explain the options after examining the tooth and reviewing any x-rays.
Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you; follow the package directions and check with a pharmacist if you have health conditions. Never place a tablet directly on the gum, as it can burn the soft tissue.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. See what Boston residents can expect from a visit in Port Dover.
