Small chip or serious break

How much of the tooth is affected determines the right repair.

Biting something hard, a sports collision or an old filling giving way can leave a tooth with a rough edge, a missing corner or a larger fracture. Some chips are minor and mainly cosmetic, while others expose the inner layers of the tooth and need attention sooner. Pain does not always match the severity.

From Bloomsburg, the first step is a call to our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can talk about urgency and availability, then examine the tooth to explain whether smoothing, bonding, a crown or other treatment would be appropriate. Mention whether the break happened during an accident.

Right after it breaks

A few simple measures help while you arrange to be seen.

  • Protect the area and save fragments

Rinse gently with water and keep any piece of tooth you find in a clean container. Avoid chewing on that side. If a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, dental wax from a pharmacy can cover it temporarily. Over-the-counter pain relief may be used as directed on the label if it is suitable for you.

  • Watch for signs that raise urgency

Call promptly if you see pink or red in the centre of the break, if the tooth is loose or pushed out of position, or if pain is strong or worsening. Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers is also worth mentioning. These signs can suggest that the inner part of the tooth is involved.

Assessment

The dentist checks what is visible and what may be hidden.

Examining the crack lines and bite

The examination looks at the size and location of the break, whether crack lines run further than the missing piece, and how your bite meets the damaged tooth. Neighbouring teeth and the gums are checked for injury too. Your description of the event, including how hard the impact was, helps the dentist interpret what they see.

Imaging when deeper damage is possible

An X-ray may be recommended to check the root and surrounding bone, particularly after a blow. Some fractures extend below the gumline and are not obvious on the surface. The findings determine whether the tooth can be repaired simply, needs more protection, or requires treatment of the nerve before it can be restored. The images also serve as a record for later comparison.

Repair options

The repair is matched to the amount of tooth that remains.

Smoothing and bonding for smaller chips

A small chip on an edge may only need polishing so it no longer feels sharp. Slightly larger losses can often be rebuilt with tooth-coloured bonding material shaped to match the original contour. The dentist can explain how durable each choice is likely to be given where the tooth sits and the forces it handles when you chew.

Crowns or further care for larger breaks

When a large portion of the tooth is gone, a crown or onlay may be suggested to hold the remaining structure together. If the nerve is exposed or damaged, root canal treatment may come first. In some cases a tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist will discuss removal and replacement choices openly before anything is decided.

Aftercare

Follow-up and habits help the repair last.

  1. Care for the tooth while it settles

Mild sensitivity after a repair is common for a short period. Ask what to expect and when to call if discomfort grows rather than fades. A temporary restoration needs gentle care until the final one is placed. Keep the follow-up appointment so the dentist can check the bite and confirm the tooth is responding as expected.

  2. Prevent the next break

If grinding, chewing ice or hard objects, or contact sports played a role, talk about ways to reduce the risk. A night guard or sports mouthguard may be worth discussing. Regular checkups also let the dentist spot weakened fillings or early cracks before they turn into another sudden break. Using scissors rather than teeth to open packages helps too.

Planning your appointment

Call before heading over from Bloomsburg.

Phone our Port Dover office and describe how the tooth broke, how much is missing and whether you have pain or sensitivity. The team can discuss urgency and the next appropriate appointment.

Bring any recovered fragment in a clean container, and mention medications or allergies when you arrive, along with what pain relief you have taken.

Broken and chipped teeth

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is a small chip an emergency?

Often it is not urgent, but it should still be checked. Call sooner if there is pain, a pink spot in the break, swelling, or a loose tooth. The team can help you judge how quickly to be seen.

Can the broken piece be reattached?

Occasionally a fragment can be bonded back on, depending on its size and condition. Keep it clean and bring it along. The dentist will explain whether reattachment or a new repair is more suitable for that tooth.

Why does my chipped tooth feel sensitive?

A chip may expose the dentin layer beneath the enamel, which can react to temperature. Lingering or strong sensitivity can suggest deeper involvement, so describe it when you call. Avoid very hot or cold drinks on that side meanwhile.

Will I need a crown?

Not always. Small chips are often repaired with bonding. A crown may be recommended when a large part of the tooth is missing or cracks threaten the remaining structure. The examination determines the options and why one is preferred.

What should I do about a sharp edge?

Cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum temporarily to protect your tongue and cheek, avoid chewing on it and arrange an assessment so the edge can be properly treated. Do not try to file it down at home.
